Hey guys,
I just picked up a Bose headset at the Bose store here.
Anyways... just had a quick question.
When i insert the batteries and turn the ANR on, i will hear a very very quiet yet constant noise, followed by a tad bit of pressure in my ears. The pressure is also constant.

Is this normal? The headset on display did this at the store too.
This is my first ANR headset so i have no idea. Actually, it's my first headset period.

Also, do i need to adjust for mono or stereo? The default is mono.
I have no idea what my aircraft uses. Its an alarus if anyone knows.

thanks

I think the pressure is kind of an auditory illusion (?), the sound the headset generates to cancel noise sounds like an increase in pressure in your ear, even though the pressure hasn't really changed...I think.

I've used mine in pistons, TPs, & jets-for me there is nothing better than the Bose. Try them in the aircraft you fly with the engine running before you form an opinion of them. They are designed to cancel out the low frequency (bass) noise of the engine.

When I first got mine and turned them on after engine start, it got so quiet that I thought the engine had quit! I then noticed that I could still hear the higher frequency noises produced by the running engine, but the low frequency sounds were just plain gone. Very nice product.

They are nice, but are they REALLY worth $500 to $600 more than a Telex Stratus or Lightspeed? I'm just asking because I'm in the market for my first ANR headset right now. Been flying with DC H10-60s for several years.

agpilot,
I own a pair of TELEX 4105 or 4150, I can't remeber the designation, but they are the model just below the stratus. I've used the Bose several times and also various Lightspeed ANR headsets. I would have to rank the Bose #1, the TELEX #2 and the Lightspeed last in my opinion. The Bose are the best but they definetly are not worth an extra $500. The difference in ANR between the TELEX and the Bose is very subtle. The light weight of the Bose is the only thing I like better. I've been using my TELEX for about 3 years now and have not had a single gripe about them.

Those sounds are normal. Turn the anr on before putting the headset on your head and you wont feel or hear those things.

agpilot- Headsets inc makes a conversion kit to change your std. DC'c to anr. Runs about 170$. I had this exact unit in my headset for 6 years. Works great, affordable, and they will install it if you want. Drawbacks...uses batteries alittle faster than factory units, uses 9v (I prefer AA), and it's heavy. The weight wasn't a big deal with my DC's because I had my 13.4's converted....and they are quite a bit lighter than the -60's. I've been very happy with mine. How do you wear DC's flying AG? Your not wearing a helmet? They also do ANR for helmets, no I don't work for them....just a happy customer.

Dont fly ag anymore, havent for a few years. I fly pipeline patrol now. I wore an HGU 33 helmet when I was flying Ag. I've seen the conversion you are talking about, but hadnt talked to anyone that had it done. I've seen the helmet conversion also, and if I ever fly ag again, I will have it done to mine. Thanks for the info.

Are you talking about when you're in a jet? Or a piston?
I train in an alarus and tried to test the Bose headset out while flying today. I could still hear quite a bit of the engine.
I remember when i was testing the headset out in the store. Some Indian dude had apollo 13 on surround sound right behind me going almost full blast during the scene when they are launching. I turned on the ANR with the BOSE and i could not hear a single thing of that movie throught he headsets. I could hear myself talk and the dude that worked there that was talking to me talk. But as far as the movie, i had forgotten it was running until i took the headphones off.

But for some reason i think that these things should be quieter than this. Could mine be defective? I can see the green LED light come on and i can feel/hear the ANR kicking in. It's just that i dont think it's as effective as it was in the store. I tried to put on some music with a bunch of bass in it. It blocked out most of the base, but not all of it like it did in the store.

Is there something wrong or maybe defective with my headset? The store is close to an hour away. I'd prefer not to drive there if i didn't have to.

Any recommendations or insight would be extremely helpful.

thanks

I love mine. Actually have a pair of them in the front seats of the airplane, (David Clarks for the kids in the back).

They actually work so well that I turn the NA off on takeoff, for an extra measure of situational awareness.

Once I get the gear up, throttles and props back and settled into the climb, I'll turn the headsets on.

After 23 years of flying noisy airplanes with the radio blaring loud, w/o noise canceling headsets, my hearing has suffered. I now have trouble hearing someone talk when in a noisy restaurant, or room, and have gotten good at lip reading to compensate.

Hmm... these things seem to be quiet or close to silent for some folks. Mine is kind of noisy. I still feel like the ANR is working... just not as quiet as i think it's suppose to be. Think mine is defective?

I've used the Lightspeed 30 3G, Telex Stratus 50D and Bose side by side in a C-172.

The Telex and Bose provided the same level of noise cancellation. The bose was lighter; the Telex still works pretty well as a passive if the batteries die. I wouldn't pay twice as much for the Bose.

The lightspeed is the next best I've tried and the difference between the three is pretty negligible anyway.

Any moron that drops down 900.00 for a pair of headsets will tell you they are the best...

I second this. I converted my DC 10-30's (which I bought used) about 3 years ago. Paid $139 then for the conversion, and they still work great. Total cost for an ANR headset was less than $300.

I have used them in Pistons and now jets. With the "Undercut" gel seals, and upgraded pading on top, I can wear them all day.

Only draw back is the 10-14 hours of 9V battery life. Rechargables last about 4-5 hours.

Great customer service. No, I don't work there either.

They will never be silent. Send them back and talk to the guy you bought them from and get an extension to the 30 trial, I did. The second pair worked fine, my first pair had a clicking sound. The X is the best NC on the market IMHO. Iv'e tried telex, Senhheiser open and closed. Besides, if it was totally silent, how would you know?

I just got mine in the mail yesterday. I am having the same problems that you are. I feel that they are not quiet enough for a $1000. I am in the process of sending them back for a new pair. I hope that I do have a problem, because if this is normal, people are getting screwed. My theory (which I hope to be false)on the Bose is that its a lightweight headset that is loud as hell with the ANR off. When the ANR is turned on, it does quiet down wich makes people think that the Bose is the greatest thing ever. However, there is almost no difference between the bose with the ANR on and my DC H10-60's.
