Hey everyone,

I just started flight school, and I need to work a part time job for some extra funds. Do you think it would be wise to work as a package handler for one of those company's at the airport? I figured it might be a good way to get into the company once I get enough hours. I've heard it's a good idea to work the ramp for a regional to get hired as a pilot in the future, but I've never heard anyone talk about this for fedex, UPS, or any major airline.

Or should I just wait tables so I can earn a few more dollars.

Thanks for the advice!

UPS likes to promote from within, but they are not really hiring right now. I think they are hiring like 300 more pilots by the end of 2005 or something, but to fill 300 slots they got 21,000 applications. I know a person that works in the personel department at SDF. I dont know about FedEx, but UPS does not pay much for humping boxes, so its going to be hard to pay for flying and do that at the same time. Plus UPS min requirements for a pilot position are pretty high, so its not like you can get all the experience you need at your local airport and then go to being a pilot at UPS, you are going to probably have to work for a regional for a couple of years before UPS will even look at you.

post office pays pretty well, but that'll be full time. when i worked the docks, i was working 12 hours six days a week. granted, this was x-mas time, but still. paychecks were fat. good luck with your training, i start in a few weeks :)

Thanks for the replies,

I'm not looking to work for ups or fedex to pay for flight school (I'm taking out a loan). The only reason I want a p/t job is to pay for some expenses such as going out. Also, I won't be done with flight school for a year, then tack on another for instructing. Even after that I know I won't have the hours to work for them. But lets say 5-10 years down the road I decide to apply, do you think they will take a year or two of working for them into consideration? Or will my past employment with them not even matter at that point?

well hello, didn't know chicks worked the ramps! I swear I'm not a sexist, just an asshole.

Thanks for the info!

Working on the FEDEX ramp is great I've heard. Be prepared for the wierd morning hours. UPS does a lot of contracting for ground handling, so ya can't really work up through the company. I did it for a while. I couldn't quite get the schedule to mesh with instructing. I didn't get paid much either.

I know a guy who was a handler at Fedex, then quit to be a pilot on a regional, and a few years later returned and got a job at fedex, hes now a fo for the 727...working at fedex gives u the right to get an interview when you get the minimum requirements for it, after that, youll have to pass the tests and all that...

The best way to work for FDX is Fly for Uncle Sam.

Just thought I'd say it first.... heh heh heh

I think FedEx will helppay for your flight training once you get your private. At least that's the way it was when I was working for them.
