Looks like American is the way to go via SJU. I work for Mesaba and I thought American had something about not letting regional airline pilots jumpseat international. Anybody have information or advice on best way to get there.

Also does anyone know if Executive Airlines takes jumpseaters????

Thanks!

Mainland US to SJU is not international as far as AA jumpseat is concern. Executive Airline A.K.A American Eagle welcomes you with open hand.

We fly there from ATL on Saturday only on a 738. I think the departure is around 1030 and it returns to ATL at 1950. This may start in March, but it was in the ATL 738 bid packet. But, we also have two 757s from ATL to STT (St Thomas) a day and you can jump on Eagle AT7s or Cape C402s from STT to STX. If you are lucky, I may be driving one of the 757s---I have a few this month! Welcome on board.

Are you sure thast you want to go to STX? It is a very beautiful island but the crime is very bad there. I cannot emphasize enough how dangerous it is. Stay off back unlit streets at night. Do not go to the secluded beaches unless with a large party of people. The US Navy cancelled the USVI as a liberty port for quite awhile to to sailors getting mugged/murdered.

The BVI or any of the down iskands are much safer and just as pretty if not moreso.

GOOD LUCK,
Be Careful

How many jumpseaters are you taking now? I can't even plan on a simple domestic commute on Delta much less plan a vacation around a Delta "jumpseat". I've resorted to a two leg offline commute to get to ATL these days. Somebody please tell me Delta has opened the jumpseat up like we keep hearing.

I got married in STX back in 2001. While we had a great time and stayed at a very nice resort, I agree with the above comments about it. If you go, I recommend staying at your resort or rental. Its a real shame that crime has gotten that bad since I left. The town of Christensted is very quaint, but the town of Fredericksted (Sp?) on the west coast is a sketchy place where most of the cruise ships have even decided not to dock anymore.

The best way to get around the USVI is by jumpseating Seaborne Aviation which flies DHC-6s on floats(holds 15 pax and open js). They fly among other places directly from the port of Christensted in STX to the port of STT. From their dock in STT, its only a short walk to the boats that take you to St.John (by far the prettiest USVI) and the BVIs. You get to skip all the airport haggles and transp hassles to the ports...

Ive gotten to STX by taking USair to SJU, then hopping on Eagle. Also ive flown from PHL to STX via STT on USair. Seaborne between STX and STT. Also Cape air has quite a few flights around as well. AMR would also be a good option.

Have fun.

There is a nonstop on AA from MIA at 1241 pm every day, flt 695.
I have flown it a lot and don't think I have seen it full yet.
Return STX-MIA flt 1290 leaves at 1717 arrives MIA at 1912.
Should be no problem getting a ride.

Not yet. But, we are making progress, which is better than nothing. If you want, you can PM me and tell me the days you are planning and I can look everything up on the Delta travel net to see how it looks. PM me the dates and I will do that for you.

Thanks for all the help on getting there as well as a heads up on the crime. Staying in a rental so that should be good. I'll be sure to keep my eyes open.

Peace out!!

We vacationed there over Thanksgiving, and it was fantastic! There's lots of ways to get there, almost all through SJU, including UAIR, NWA from DTW on Saturdays only, CAL from NY, and all the others mentioned.

I had no problems jumpseating AA from MIA-SJU-STX then back on UAIR to SJU and NW to DTW to go to work. We had no problems that were crime related whatsoever and wandered wherever, whenever. STX is trying to secede (sp?) from the U.S. and there is some friction there, so wouldn't be surprised about the unfriendly military response, but got nothing but friendliness from everyone else. They WANT tourists - it's just about their only trade.

Horseback riding was good, scuba off the north end is the BEST. If you take your own basic equipment, only $20 per dive for tank and weights and a guide - one guide for just you or you and your party - no crowded dive boats! Lots of octupi of many different varieties I'd never seen. Food was good but pricey - we FedEx'd a bunch of basic dried stuff down and cooked in the kitchen in our room on the cheap. Several good restaurants for "splurging".

Hope you have a great time!
