sure , you can go with "who you ask" thing, there is no argument, not like RJDC or anything, as a jumpseater, I would say that you are limited, if not you are just inconveniencing the flight crew and the F/A's with all of your stuff. I am almost certain it is policy, but i always offer to gate check it if i carry an extra bag, which is rare.

I always take as little as I can get by with...when I'm working, and especially when I'm jumpseating. It makes the inevitable "random selection" at the gate go a bit more quickly.
