On Friday the judge presiding over the Air Transport Association lawsuit concluded that the National Mediation Board had the right to change the voting rules, even though many people disagreed with the change.

“Delta is disappointed with the ruling, however, we are pleased that the court reviewed this case quickly,” Delta said in a statement. “We hope the Association of Flight Attendants and International Association of Machinists will now move forward to resolve representation. Our people deserve the opportunity to make their choice about whether or not to have union representation.”

Big loss for the ATA

If this stands, this will be a big loss for the ATA. The ATA is a pretty powerful airline management union that represents 90% of passenger and cargo airlines. Together, these airlines have a very powerful voice, and airline management knows that.

After having been dealt this failure, among others in their past, I wonder if their membership, led by May and our very own anti-labor Glenn Tilton, is wondering if they should individually quit the ATA because the ATA is "ineffective?" I wonder if the ATA's members are making fun of their leadership because of this failure? I wonder if the ATA membership is complaining that the ATA only cares about getting bigger so that it can collect more membership fees and make their leader May a bigger salary? I wonder if their members are making fun of their Board member's mustaches?

Or I wonder if the ATA membership realizes that even though the ATA is an imperfect organization that has failures in the past and will have failures in the future that it is FAR better to speak with a unified voice when you are trying to represent your interests to the public and the government?

Hmmmm.......When it comes to the above, I know where airline management has us beat.

I'd rather have ALPA than CAC

If the UAL/CAL merger goes through and USAirways goes under there will be 2 large majors plus Fedex at ALPA. They need the regional memebership and they'll need to start advocating for us instead of against us.

As for what they have to offer, they're not perfect and I'm no ALPA cheerleader. But if the company tries to force you to something wrong (it happened here back in the day) or if you have a medical or legal issue there's no better resource than ALPA with it's deep pockets and and connections within the FAA.

Ask somone who has needed ALPA to help them with a medical issue or a violation. The 1.9% was a lot less painful than the possible impact on their career. The real problems with ALPA have to do with the LECs and MECs lack of competence.
