I'm no longer associated with a team, but I'll be there to help out judging... nothing more fun that sitting in a cemetery for 8 hours with a complete stranger...

9000 on furlough ...

Unfortunately until the majors begin to hire and suck up the 9000+ furloughed pilots we wont see significant long term "recovery".

9000 on furlough, but how many are still unemployed?

I imagine that most found employment but with the exception of those major-airline furloughees who were fortunate enough to get on with Southwest, FedEx, Alaska -- or even perhaps Frontier, Jetblue, AirTran, Comair -- most of them will continue to job-hunt.

I would bet that there are literally thousands who accepted employment at regional airlines or even outside of aviation entirely during their furlough who, once the industry begins to recover, will be anxious to get back into the cockpit.

Hey, this is just one man's opinion (mine), but I do think we've bottomed out.

Notwithstanding the pending American furlough (sorry guys) I think the trend has just begun to reverse.

FedEx is apparently calling their poolies into a class soon.

Historically it seems to be a domino effect. Everyone waits to see what the others do.

When one hires the others follow.

Watch. You read it here first...well, maybe not, but good luck anyway.

OK so I am new with this whole industry. Try not to jump on my back to hard. Trying to learn and understand it. I hear about all these pilots that lost their jobs and are waiting to get back in the cockpit. So why aren't they applying for the jobs these CFIs applied for? Is it because they are being paid more on unemployment? Or is it because they are hoping to get their jobs back? I would think a company like skyway would rather have a laid off united pilot over a CFI out of a 141 school.

But taking a furloughed major airline pilot and putting them in the right seat at a regional doesn't create movement in our industry.

Traditionally when major airlines hire, they suck up the regional airline Captains, which create a vacancy so F/Os upgrade, which creates a vacancy so a pilot must be hired.

So lets say in a few years the majors start to hire again. Now you've got all of these somewhat junior F/Os at the regional who happen to already be well-qualified former major-airline pilots. The majors hire THESE guys and, since they're being sucked out of junior copilot seats, no additional movement is created.

Just my opinion. I'm glad that hiring is occuring at the regional level, but a LOT more is going to have to happen for the industry to return to the 1999 paradigm of 3 year upgrades and 5 years to the majors.

A naive question maybe... How did 9000 pilots get furloughed? I was under the impression that airlines have been expanding (up until 9/11). Air travel has become so cheap, you'd think that the # of customers flying would increase. More people send express packages (FedEx, UPS, etc.). Plus, you'd think that the average age of a pilot in the majors must be pretty high, so there should in the not to distant future, be a huge demand again.

I heard on the radio the other day that the railroad industry is hiring again (engineers, etc) due to so many people retiring.

Yep, jobs are picking up; got 2 job offers right now (1 turboprop and 1 citation) and I am keeping in touch with 2 companies who will be hiring in the next month (both jetjobs)
All corporate.

Oh yes, I can't wait to find out what a normal person lives like......

And for Lewis U Pilot, for someone in your point in the industry, yes there is movement right now. I know at least 20 CFI's who've been hired by airlines in the last 4-5months. And these are just the people I know, 4 of who were my students. This makes for more CFI jobs too which is good for you. Some companies make a pilot lose their seniority if they take a job elsewhere while on Furlough so some people prefer to wait.

By the way, my brother went to Lewis, he was working as a controller at Ohare but is now in Baghdad. You wouldn't know him though he was way before your time.

Electoral College

I didn't know much about the electoral college before that election. It amazes me that someone could get the most votes and not win the election.

If not for the electoral college, NY, Chicago, LA and Boston would elect every president and the rest of the country would have no say. The founding fathers designed the EC for a good reason, so everyone has a voice in electing a president.

Bush is not the first present to be elected this way and will not be the last.

Just curious, why do you hate freight?

Just tired of breaking my back for the past three years, sleeping in sh*t holes, working horrible hours, being filthy at the end of every day, eating out of vending machines, being treated like dirt at FBO's.. etc.. etc.. etc

This work makes you a great pilot but gets old...
