I heard a rumor that JetBlue was going to have a pilot open house on the west coast in October. Anyone know if it's true, if so when and where.

The rumor I heard was that they were even going to interview same day. Again just a rumor unless someone can verify it.

Thanks for the help

They are rejecting current A320 pilots with 7000 TT as being non-cempetetive with other interviewees (happened to a guy I know), and with my quals. (no jet PIC) can't even get an interview. So why would they go to the trouble and expense of an open house, and on the west coast where the nearest pilot domicile is 3000 miles away?

It does sound good though; hope it's true.

The LGB pilot domicile rumor is surfacing again...makes sense that they'd want west coast pilots if they were to open up a domicile there. What better way to staff a new domicile than to recruit locals who won't be commuting form NY?

There has been a big push with LGB recently, lots of expansion, and the locals love JB.

IF the LGB rumor is true then I agree the open house would make sense. However I recall some JB pilots here from time to time saying that a LGB domicile was unlikely or at the very least would not happen any time soon.

As a SoCal resident, I'm obviously crossing my fingers. ANy info from JB pilots would be appreciated.

gotta have 1,000 hours of jet pic time and 1,000 hours in a/c that are over 20,000 lbs.
the story i hear about them is that by 2005 they want to have 1800 pilots and now they have less than 500. so maybe the are in position to gear up the amount of pilots in the pool. I agree that I don't think they would have to have an open house to find 2,000 pilots right now!!!

Probably true to be competetive, but the actual requirement per the website is 1000 PIC Turbine along with the 1000 in 20,000+ lb. aircraft.

Hey Jeff G,

Is the requirement for PIC time 1000 of turbine or 1000 hours of jet PIC?

Here it is from the website.

FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certification.
1500 hours total time in airplanes (excluded: Helo, Sim, F/E time)**
1000 hours turbine PIC in airplanes**
1000 hours in airplanes over 20,000 pounds (max take off weight)**
Recency of flight experience will be considered.
Current FAA Class 1 Medical Certificate***
FCC Radio License
Current Passport
Three reference letters from pilots who can personally attest to the candidates flying skills (must bring originals to interview)
Vision corrected to 20/20
Legally authorized to work in the U.S.A.
Able to pass a 10-year security background check and a drug test
A320 experience not required
Also see "Skills" (below)
Applicants MUST meet all of the minimum qualifications in order to be considered for an interview. Our team regularly reviews online applications and grants interviews on a competitive basis. The following criteria will be taken into consideration: quality of flight training; diverse operational experience; quantity of hours flown - especially as PIC; experience with complex airplanes/systems; type of operation in which the pilot has recent experience.

*Competitive hours can be significantly higher depending on the qualifications of the applicants in our system at any given time. We are currently seeing the following hours in candidates selected to interview:

Between 3,000 and 10,000 hours total time in airplanes
> 2,000 hours turbine PIC in jets
> 2,000 hours in airplanes over 20,000 lbs mtow
Experience with more sophisticated aircraft utilizing EFIS, FMS systems
Experience in the A320 family of airplanes (left or right seat)
** Military applicants should use a conversion factor of .3 for the hours flown in each of the categories designated above by a double asterisk (**). Simply multiply the hours flown in these categories by 1.3 and enter that number in the appropriate fields of your JetBlue web application.

*** Military applicants may apply with a Military Medical Certificate. However, everyone must be able to obtain and hold a current Class I FAA Medical Certificate prior to arrival for training, if selected.

Applicants selected to interview must be able to provide documentation of the above-mentioned criteria at the time of their interview.

Candidates who have previously interviewed for the pilot position at JetBlue must wait at least six months before beginning the application process again.

I haven't heard anything concerning an open house for pilots. It would not surprise, however, to see an open house for ground crewmembers. As was previously mentioned, we are about a month away from having 23 flights per day from LGB so we are in need of people to work those flights.

The last thing I heard about a west coast crew base is that it would NOT be in LGB. At least as of now. With the slot restrictions, it doesn't make sense. The new SoFla base opens on Nov. 1st.

You are right that it is 1000 PIC "turbine".

If I hear any info on a "pilot" open house, I'll make sure to pass it on.

Another rumor was that the west coast base would be OAK. LGB has a curfew and JetBlue likes to do a lot of midnight flights, so it just wouldn't work out. Of course OAK is stuffed with Southwest, and Alaska, plus a bunch of smaller carriers so it should be interesting.

Just had a buddy from my class in MIA who had Dave Barger on the jumpseat. He said Dave Barger himself mentioned the next base would be OAK. The night restrictions at LGB are just too inefficient for operations. Air Mexicana has been kicked out of their original OAK ticket counter so JB can expand to the end of the terminal. We'll operate 3 gates out of there in Sep and have over 100 ground personnel trained to handle the influx. Maintenance rented out a 1200 square foot facility out here as well.

Of course, that is now 3rd hand gossip/rumor. So take that for what it's worth.

Also, spoke with Dean Melonas this past weekend and he never mentioned a pilot interview process on the west coast. Just doesn't make sense to have to reinvent the wheel for a west coast interview opportunity when everything set up for JFK is tried and true.

But then what do I know, I just fly the Bus where they tell me and land it there too most of the time.

Happy landings
