If you proactively cancel flights, you don't need to deal with the pax Bill of Rights implications with delays. berry, berry smart.

That Bill of Rights is what the people wanted. Now they are going to have to live with it.

For years JB would do whatever it took to get a flight done, maybe 3-6 hours late but still better than getting stuck overnight in an airport somewhere. And the completion factor was almost always over 98%. Now, well its easier to cancel and try to make it work somehow later on.

Cheaper to cancel than to pay for the BOR.

NEW YORK - JetBlue canceled 215 flights Friday because of a winter storm on the East Coast, aiming to avoid the days of cancellations and criticism that followed a storm last month, an airline spokesman said.

The cancellations affected about one-third of all JetBlue flights. More than 200 of them involved flights to or from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, said company spokesman Sebastian White.

Is this going to be a trend everytime there is a storm in the NY area?

Hey red doggie, next time you get the notion to bash JB you might want to take a look at the forcast and what other airlines in the area are doing as well. It might just keep you from looking foolish.

Fly safe!

Is this going to be a trend everytime there is a storm in the NY area?

Not a trend, it is policy. The other hub carriers learned long ago that it was better to thin out the schedule well before the weather event in order to avoid the meltdown.

JB management, as the new kid on the block, couldn't figure this out by observing. They had to go through it themselves to realize this is the only way to deal with it. To not thin out the schedule has to do with the hubris of youth and inexperience. Sometimes a new idea (let's fly the entire schedule during a blizzard because people will like us and it will give us a competitive edge over the weenies who cancelled flights) is just a failed old idea that people forgot about.

Flights canceled as snow hits Northeast U.S.
Fri Mar 16, 2007
NEW YORK, March 16 (Reuters) - Winter returned to the northeastern United States on Friday after a period of spring-like weather with snowstorms forcing airlines to cancel hundreds of flights.
Snow and rain halted ground transportation at New York's LaGuardia Airport and Philadelphia International, with many airports from Washington to Boston experiencing delays.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning covering most of the territory over states from Pennsylvania to Maine with heavy snow warnings for some areas.
The Weather Channel forecast 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm) of snow in some areas.
JetBlue Airways Corp. <JBLU.O> canceled 235 flights, aiming to avoid its troubles of a month ago when passengers were trapped in grounded aircraft for up to 10 hours because of the weather.
US Airways Group Inc. <LCC.N> canceled 150 flights, mostly because of the backup at Philadelphia and LaGuardia, a spokesman said. Delta Air Lines Inc. <DALRQ.PK> announced on Thursday it was canceling 250 flights, and a spokesman for American Airlines, part of AMR Corp. <AMR.N>, said the airline canceled 120 flights.
Most of JetBlue's canceled flights were to and from New York's John F. Kennedy airport, where the worst of its Valentine's Day service fiasco took place.
JetBlue Airways said it would cost $30 million or more to reimburse the 130,000 or so passengers affected by canceled flights in February, leading to a fall in its share price.
The low-cost carrier, which has won fans in the past for its reluctance to cancel flights because of bad weather, blamed last month's problems on its inability to cope with rescheduling so many flight crews.
In response the company unveiled the "JetBlue Customer Bill of Rights," a sliding scale of reimbursements for delayed flights that offers the value of a round-trip ticket for flights that are four or more hours late.

WHEN CATASTROPHIC WEATHER EVENTS SIGNIFICANTLY DISRUPT
OUR SCHEDULE AND THERE IS A NEED TO ENCOURAGE MAKEUP FLYING,
THE COMPANY OFFERS PAY PROTECTION OUTSIDE OF CONTRACTUAL
PROVISIONS. AS YOU MAY KNOW, THE APA HAS PETITIONED THE COMPANY
FOR PAY PROTECTION FOR PILOTS AFFECTED BY WEATHER EVENTS
EARLIER THIS WEEK IN ORD AND THE NORTHEAST. AFTER CAREFUL
REVIEW OF PILOT STAFFING FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE MONTH, THE
COMPANY HAS MADE THE DECISION NOT TO OFFER PAY PROTECTION
IN
THIS PARTICULAR INSTANCE. HOWEVER, THE COMPANY UNDERSTANDS THIS
IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE FOR PILOTS AND LOOKS FORWARD TO
DISCUSSING THE ENHANCEMENT OF PILOT SCHEDULE FLEXIBILITY,
RELIABILITY AND PRODUCTIVITY IN SECTION 6 DELIBERATIONS.

US Air is a bit brave. From CNN.com

"USAirways (Charts), in a decision that underscores JetBlue's sensitivity to the problem, cancelled none of its East Coast flights.

"The weather is fine for flying," company spokesman Andrew Christie said.

The Phoenix.-based airline will handle any air traffic control issues arising from the weather on a case-by-case basis, Christie said."

Mr. Christie seems to have spoken too soon.
