Those of you that subscribe...how bad is the revision process?

I really don't care for the NACO charts but don't know that I want to go through a Jepp subscription either...there don't seem to be a ton of options.

Any ideas?

Jepp revisions are a pain in the ass unless you are only flying in a small portion of the country, if you have to maintain a full set of the US you will be spending hours updating them, NACO charts are awsome, no revisions.

After using Jepp charts for a few years, I could never go back to NOS charts.

I have used jepp charts for 2 different companies and the revision process is simple in either case, but you need to update them regularly, don't let 2 or 3 revisions pile up, because then it will take a longer time.

The first company I worked for only had the SE and SC regions of the country, and each time a revision came in I would simply do the updates page by page.
This is OK if you only have 2 regions to update.

The company I work for now has the entire US, and doing the updates page by page is out of the question (it would take forever each time one came in). You would need to subscribe to the Q-service, which is where they send you all the updates, but you don't put them in your books immediately. You put all the updates into one book, and pull out only the updates you need for a particular flight. Then, once every 3-4 months, they send you a completely new content, and you throw everything you have away (including all the updates you never updated) and replace it with brand new charts, and the process starts all over again. This method is a little more expensive than the first.

Hope this info helps.

There are ladies at our operations who make good money posting Jepp revisions to lazy pilots' kit bags. I'm not quite there yet but it is sure onerous.

Is the extra expense worth it?

*edit*
also- when they send you an update, do they send the whole page or just the approach?

IOW: If I have ILS 23 on the front and VOR-A on the back and the VOR-A gets a new MDA for a crane or something, do I get the whole page with ILS 23 and VOR-A or just VOR-A...

I'd hate to start doing this crap and then all of a sudden not have an ILS or NDB that I need...

*double edit*

A. Do I need to have the whole country in case I get an interview somewhere or will just my region do?

B. Does anyone else just use the plain-jane black binders that you get at Staples or do you need the Jepp binders...like, is it frowned upon like you're a cheap pilot (which I am)?

The revisions will not be overly time consuming or bad considering that you will specifically be operating in one region and location when you start your flight instructing. If you don't want to worry about revisions then the simple solution would be to purchase the already revised Jepps everytime they come out where as you simply throw your old ones out and use the new ones.

Stick with your specific region that you will be using and operating in, no need to have the entire country until you are in equipment that would dictate you needing the entire subscription.

One thing you can do is get JeppView 3. This will eliminate the need for paper filing, but it will also mean you'll have to select your approach plates wisely.

When you carry three binders worth of charts, you'll find that a cold sweat breaks out when you see that little white envelope in your V-file twice a month.

If you are doing paper...gotta get the Q-Service. Big increase in price, but sure as heck beats the time doing the revisions to places you never will go and the hours to do the annual checklist.

Our flight ops interns do that too.

5 bucks for a major revision packet.

Maybe we can start a new business.

Revisions R Us

They really arn't that bad, and I wa in charge of six seperate kits for all of Europe, Pacific Island, and I think asia. Revesions came once every 2 weeks or so. Just keep up with them, its really not that bad.
