EOPilot,

Yeah, I guess you’re right. What would possibly cause me assume that the public airways were only meant to be federally licensed, radio and TV stations, for the purposs of purveying smut into my home. Sorry, My bad! I will no longer allow small children to watch a baseball game, or watch Tom Brokaw in the evening to check on current events. Yup, TV is going into the dumpster tonight. Thank you for your enlightened view of reality.

Oh, my pleasure. Glad to be of service. By the way, if you think small children should be watching network news, then you've got a completely different definition of obscenity than I do.

But I'm sure you knew that already.

Yeah, guess I'm just out of the mainstream of American society. Fourteen year old people have no business knowing anything about what's going on in the world they live in; never mind that one day will be running it. We certainly don't want them to be edu'ma'cated about anything, do we? And certainly as a parent, I shouldn't be watching that icky news stuff either, with kids in the house, right? That'd be awful if they happend into the room where the news was on in the evening. You are right, oh enlightened one. All parents must throw their TV's and radios into the dumpster, as you have suggested. To heck with rules and regulations governing decency. We don't need no stinkin' rules. Throw the F.C.C. out. And while we're at it, since government is too obtusive in all our lives, let's not have any rules about speed on the highways either. No driver's liscense should ever be needed, that's another role of big government keeping us all on the teat as well. And while we're at it, le's get rid of that pesky Air Traffc Control system. If we're not willing to just look out for it all on our own, well, we just shouldn't be flying, right?

Rules and norms in our country are just driving everyone down. Pretty soon, if we allow it, we can all be walking on our knuckles again. I'm glad you have a head start on that front.

Now you're talking! Lawmakers and appointees deciding what I should consider decent? I think that went out with Edsels and McCarthyism.

Throw the F.C.C. out.

No. They still provide the vital service of allocating frequencies.

Sure. That's the same thing.

Let me ask you, how many deaths has the FCC prevented by regulating obscenity?

Pretty soon, if we allow it, we can all be walking on our knuckles again. I'm glad you have a head start on that front.

Whoa, wait a moment. I'm not going to throw away my TV. I just suggested the option that seemed to suit you best without you having to stick your indecency detector into my living room.

No No No....I already said I have no objection to you renting all the porn films you want. That keeps it out of my livingroom, and you can watch the stuff all day long.

You suggested that the way to prevent young kids from being exposed to that trash, is for the parent to be at their side 24/7, moniter everything they see and do, and allow them to only read books.

I think you've got a real problem with the reality of day to day life in the rearing of children. In any event, you lose. There is an FCC, and there is a Supreme Court in this country that has stated the the public has the right to determine "comunity standards" on Obscenty. Ya can't display uncovered copy's of Larry Flint's Hustler in a grocery store, and ya can't put obscenity over regulated public airwave. I know you have a problem with that, but it is your problem, as the laws and practice of protecting kids from this stuff are on my side. I guess you will just have to go cry in your beer over that, and wail on these boards about how unfair life is being to you, that you can't have porn everywhere you want it.

Ta-ta, over and out. I be done on this thread. The pervs can keep the dialog going on it. I got other fish to fry.

That being said I believe parents need to control and monitor what the kids are watching and doing, it's parent 101 stuff. I have no kids but I do know how they should be raised.
That's hilarious. You have no kids, but you KNOW how they should be raised. I tell ya, buddy, all of us thought that way before we had kids. I'd be careful what I say, if I were you, because the more words you disgorge, the more you'll have to eat.

... while radio which is usually listened to by adults on the way to or from or at work is being dumped on by the FCC I'm refering to talk radio which has the demographic of 21 to 45 males in mind. I can't think of a single minor or person under the age of 18 who listens to this kind of radio. If you ever listen and hear a caller complain it's normally a woman who is listening to the show and just want's to be on the air no matter what. Why listen if you are going to call and complain, simply change the channel.
I can't believe you can honestly say that America's parents should have been standing guard over their children as they viewed the Super Bowl Halftime festivities to be prepared to avert their eyes when the obscenity popped onto the screen, and provide trauma counselling if they were too late to spare the child from the event. Your argument that the FCC sanctions should apply only to TV, and not radio, however, are inconsistent.

I fall into your assumed demographic, and enjoy listening to talk radio. Not only do I listen when driving to or from work, I enjoy listening when I drvie the kids to school, or pick them up. I enjoy it when I'm taking them to the doctor, or the store, or Wednesday night Bible study. I enjoy taking my preschool son with me when I run errands around town. It really IRKS me, then, when I have to turn the radio off and apologize to my children for the garbage they just heard that I didn't see coming. I'm not talking about Howard Stern, I'm talking about rather conservative shows during the mid-day and afternoon hours, news and traffic shows in the morning and afternoon - - shows that should be harmless, fit for consumption by all ears.

Radio stations need to meet standards, too. I'm glad to see the attention they're receiving.

I think Network News should be fit for viewing by the entire family. If they feel a need to air something that is NOT fit for the entire family, they should at least warn viewers so parents can do the policing you think they ought to do. It's hard to police something that has ALREADY been seen.

It's a shame you ran away with your fingers in your ears after getting in THE FINAL WORD, but for my own amusement, I'll continue responding.

Gee, thanks for your permission, Dad.

I think you've got a real problem with the reality of day to day life in the rearing of children.

Actually, I've got no problem at all. I'm not the one ranting about the crap on TV. My kids watch TV. I just have them avoid certain channels and shows. My five-year-old is not going to watch the news on TV. That's that. Instead, I choose to explain to him the good and evil in the world and teach him about geography and culture. He doesn't need to see Iraqis being tortured, or piles of dead bodies, or hear about the latest serial rapist. THAT is the obscenity that I'm trying to keep him and his sister away from as much as practicable. And you know what? It's not really that hard.

There is an FCC, and there is a Supreme Court in this country that has stated the the public has the right to determine "comunity standards" on Obscenty.

Yeah, cause we all know how well that solved the "problem" once and for all.

Funny, I was going to tell you the same thing!

Oh, yeah and to TonyC...
Trauma counseling?? For seeing a woman's breast??? Oh, yeah, your kids will be the well adjusted ones.
