Anyone have any info on JALways interviews in Denver? WASINC is doing the screening. They are hiring 747 FO'S for HNL base.

I have no info on pay or work conditions?

Any info appreciated.

This is the information for Hawaii Aviation (I'm sure the requirements are similar to WASINC):

First Officer
Minimum Requirements

 • 2500 total flying hours as a pilot.
 • 300 hours jet time (60 pax or more).
 • ATP
 • 20/60 or better in each eye, correctable to 20/20.
 • Strict height/weight limits.
Additional screening for attitude, appearance, breadth of experience, personality, and adaptability. A stringent two-day physical examination is required, and will be paid for by Hawaii Aviation Contract Services. Simulator evaluation is conducted by Japan Airline Instructor Pilots in Tokyo. Free transportation to Tokyo with hotel, ground transfers, and per diem paid for by Hawaii Aviation Contract Services.

*All pilots are initially hired as First Officers with the opportunity to upgrade to Captain.

Note that some of their medical requirements are tougher than our military... vision is required to be 20/60 or better uncorrected, whereas the USAF will take you in with 20/70 uncorrected. And when they say strict height/weight requirements, they do mean STRICT ! A "stringent two-day physical" conducted in Japan, so good luck passing Japanese standards.

Ahhhhhhh... found one direct from WASINC's website !

Hell yeah. Japanese medical standards have got to be among the toughest in the world.

Cholesterol restrictions? WTF?

Oh yeah, passing that JCAB medical exam is no walk in the park! I know that at NCA the JCAB initial medical exam was two days long & included the EEG.....

A friend of mine is a big swimmer and he busted the physical. By their standards most Astronauts are a walking heart attack.

But--if you make it through, the job is great.TC

JAL FO position

Any idea of pay rates, schedule/lifestyle? I assume there's a training contract (747-400?)....

Thanks

Or, more correctly, I think JAL only hires Americans through either:

1. WASINC

2. Hawaii Aviation

You cannot get hired on 'mailine' JAL based in Tokyo.

I believe that IASCO out of Foster City, CA has hired expats directly in to -400. Not sure if they are still involved with JAL, but they have a very long and rich history with this company.

 • B737 Captains Typed and Current - Japan Base Class start in July 2005. Screening to to begin soon.
 • B-747-200 First Officers, HNL Base - anticipate class commencing 2005. Screening to begin in mid 2005.
 • A-320/A-330/A-340 Captains and First Officers, Multiple Bases - Seeking experienced and Typed Crews
 • B-777 Captains Various Bases - Seeking typed and experienced Captains

So, I guess IASCO is the third company that JAL uses to hire American pilots for the HNL operation. B742, not B744. I coulda sworn that JAL has never hired an expat pilot into the -400, mainline JAL.

You could be right. I cannot think of anyone in particular that has gone to JAL via IASCO directly to the -400. IASCO has a very long relationship with JAL dating back to when JAL first strted service in the early fifties. I believe that one or more of the founders were a part of the first cadre of expat pilots who started up in the DC4's & later DC6B's at JAL. For along time they were the only outside crew providor for JAL. Pilots, FE's and Navigators all came from IASCO in those days. Might hurt to throw an application in over there just in case.

I have a relative flying for mainline JAL, and they do not (at present) hire foreign citizens onto the 747-400, 777, MD-11, or 767 series. All JAL mainline flights are operated by Japanese nationals only, with the exception of a few foreigners hired many many years ago.

I am a Japanese citizen through a parent, and at present, I am not even able to apply to mainline JAL as I was not born and raised in Japan. I have been told that this COULD change in the future, as they have a pilot shortage on the horizon. Early retirements at JAL are being denied bacause of it.

Good Luck to us all.

I am currently flying for Jalways and helped do the simulator evals in Denver this month. While there the Jalways chief ground instructer and JAlways Vice President were in town. Wantanabe-son, the instructer, is currently writing the ground school training manuals for the B747-400. It is scheduled to make its first appearence in the Jalways fleet in mid-late 2006. There has yet been no official announcement. Generally with these things I dont believe it until I am sitting in the cocpit, pushing back. The 400 is slated to be the replacement for the 747 classics that we currently fly. RIght now this is the only way you will get on the 400 working for the JAL group. THey dont hire western pilots for JAL mainline at this time. However as someone pointed out earlier they have a major pilot shortage looming due to retirements, so things could change.

Looking at the guaranteed pay, it seems very low, especially considering Hawaii based. With overtime it looks better if you could fly 80 hours or so.

Does anybody know --

1. What is the pay during the 5-6 month training period?

2. What is the average number of hours one could expect a month.

3. Is the 10 days off a month in consecutive days, or is it dribbled into the month?

4. Are there any jumpseat privileges back to the mainland for a commute.

Nca

Look at HACS.....they are hiring for NCA and have recently changed their requirements. Now a 747 type is desired not required. Their training in Japan is only 2 months long instead of 8 with JAL.

NCA is affiliated with ANA and I've heard that ANA treats its employees better.

Also, NCA pays better out of the gate for their F/Os (7k+ vs 5-6k) and you could be based in the continental US...SFO and JFK I think.
