This simply isn't true. I failed my initial color test (Ishihara) 11 years ago when I got my first medical. I then went to the opthamologist and took (and passed) the FALANT (Farnsworth Lantern Test) which is significantly easier to pass than the Ishihara and is acceptable to the FAA. I submitted the test results to OKC and had a full unrestricted medical within weeks of my taking that test. No SODA. No Waiver. The Ishihara just tests if you are color normal or not. It is a very tight test. The FALANT tests the degree of your color deficiency. In my case, it is a very mild red/green issue as I have no problem detecting changes in the PAPI, VASI, etc.LJDRVR said:If you fail the ishihara plate test, you must send a letter to the feds requesting a statement of demonstrated ability test. Your local FSDO will administer the test. IF your color vision deficiency is slight, you'll pass.
