Heard "DeHavilland 05" going into ATL last night. Controller confirmed it was a Dash 400.

Is ASA thinking about replacing the ATR's with the 400's???

possibly

I did hear out of Skip Barnett's mouth that the company is looking at all options with regards to replacing the ATR and he did say the Q400 was something to look at, but that is all.

Our ATR's (19) are up for the lease in 2005, I think we own a few, but most are leased.

So, who knows why that one was there, I would be amazed that ASA is looking out that far ahead. Maybe we will have to "Bid" for them too.Geezz.

Last thursday in VPS

This aircraft was loaded with Delta VIP's and flew down to Ft Walton Beach to let the ground crews check out the parking requirements and get a look at the aircraft. Looks like it could happen in 2005. I know one thing, ground equipement is costly with the ATR's and is the cause for many delays wich would be alleviated with the 400's. Also the 400's are much faster and have the same panel as the RJ (so I'm told). :p

As you said the 400's are quite fast, they true at about 380.

The panel, however is only unique to itself. It is glass, but uses round gauges in the picture (this was intended to maintain a common DHC8 type). The FMS is Universal. Really nothing like an RJ.

Pay Rates

I know this may be premature, but anyone have any idea what pay would be like on the Q400 as opposed to RJ pay? I guess what I'm asking is: what percentage (approx) of an RJ pay rate can you expect if you fly the dash?

I am trying to ascertain whether the Q400 will be substantially more junior if we were to see it on property at ASA. At ASA, the ATR holds similar relative seniority to the CRJ 200 and that the retirement of the Brasilias effectively left the junior guys without a viable option for getting a small taste of the good life.

I personally would love to see the Q400 replace the ATR's.

Q400 rates would probably be the same as current ATR rates if the seats are the same.

Someone else hit it on the head, I doubt ASA thinks this far in advance.....

The Universal is not that good an FMS and the CRJ700 is barely faster than the ATR on the stage lengths it flies - why change for 4 minutes? Especially when the Dash 8 burns nearly twice the gas....

ASA's VP of Flight Ops is Typed in the ATR and flew them for Ransome (aka Pan Am Express, now Delta). He likes ATRs.

Unless the French really show their butts ( as they are some times inclined to do ) the ATR's will be around until the end of the decade. Besides, Delta does not have the cash to go shopping and their debt rating smells worse than Monterrey after a drought. Anyone want to finance a Dash 8 Q400 at 12.5 %?

And doesn't the ATR only go to VPS and CHA :)

This rumor comes back every few months. Which Universal FMS does it have (UNS-1C or D)? I have used both and like them better than the piece of junk we have in the CR7.

Any new aircraft are likely to go to the lowerst cost provider.

Flying the ATR is probably the coolest gig at the company. I really enjoy it. Granted, it's not the most glamorous but an airplane is just an airplane. I would fly a Cub, Convair, or a Shorts if they paid me enough. The coolest thing about the 400's is the possibilty of growth, but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon.
I'm lookin at 5-6 yrs as F. O., then when I do upgrade, I'll be on reserve for 2-3 years. I'm not trying to be grim, but it is what it is. So I guess I'll have to relax and enjoy the lifestyle of a senior F. O. and play lots of golf. But I am getting tired of pullin' gear.
