Int'l Jumpseat through NRT

Quick question for NWA types & anyone who has jumpseated through Tokyo.

1. Do you still have to pay departure tax if you're just connecting to another flight in NRT and not going through customs/outside security?

2. If you have to pay the tax, can it be done at the gate or do you HAVE to go through Japanese customs & immigration to get to the ticket counter?

No departure tax for transits. In fact no departure tax if you're there less than 24 hours I believe.

Don't know if you are only talking about NWA, but I have commuted through NRT on UAL several times, changing planes in NRT. I was asked each time (at the gate) to pay the tax when I was departing. I never had to leave the secured area to talk to anyone else.

Sometimes I have paid, and some not. When you get off of the airplane in NRT, you will have to go through a security rescreening. I have found it much easier to buy a Zed or ID90 ticket just to show the security people (they will want to see your ticket) than trying to explain the whole jumpseat thing. The first time I did it, I did have anything but my ID and I had to go through immigration, outside to the ticket counter, then back in. Since then, I carried a ticket with me and havent had any problems. (refunded it when I got back home)

I jumpseated through NRT less than a month ago on NWA. On the return leg NRT-SFO I did not have to exit security, but did go to a customer service counter to pay a tax. Was a total of about $12, and they accepted my credit card.

ID 96 on NWA, or ID 90 on JAL. JAL has a much friendlier non rev policy. If there is an empty seat when you walk up, they give it to you then instead of 5 minutes before departure.

I think if you pay a tax then they screwed up. I've been through several times and never paid or been asked to pay except when I stayed overnight. I know people who've gone up for the day and not paid... and I know people who've gone up for the day and accidentally paid because they didn't know they didn't have too...

You know, if someone says its gonna cost you $12 to fly from Japan to the US, I'm really not going to split hairs over whether anyone screwed up or not. I think thats the deal of the century!
