(AP) OSHKOSH The president of the Experimental Aircraft Association's chapter in Ottawa, Canada was killed in a plane crash at the group's annual AirVenture show.
The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department identified the victim from Sunday's collision as Gary Palmer, 63, of Nepean, Ontario. Palmer was president of EAA Chapter 245, based in Ottawa.
Authorities said Palmer was on his way home Sunday afternoon when the propeller of a Navy warbird sliced into his home-built airplane on a taxiway at the Oshkosh airport.
The World War II-era Grumman TBM Avenger and the Van's RV were on a taxiway when the Avenger hit the RV from behind, authorities said. Palmer was declared dead at Wittman Regional Airport.
An autopsy performed Monday determined he died from multiple injuries caused by the Avenger's propeller, Lt. Cherilyn Eischen said.
The pilot of the RV, Donald W. Reed, 58, of Carp, Ontario, was not injured, which was a surprise, Eischen said.
"It was a significant amount of force," Eischen said.
Neither of the two people in the Avenger were injured. They were identified as Paul M. Redlich, 45, of Batavia, Ohio, the pilot, and his wife, Diane, who was in the rear of the two-seat Avenger.
Federal investigators said a preliminary report, following pilot and witness interviews, could be released within several days.
Any charges or citations related to the collision would come after investigations are completed by the National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department, Eischen said.
Billed as the world's largest gathering of recreational aviators, AirVenture, a fly-in and convention of the aircraft association, attracts more than 10,000 airplanes and nearly 250,000 aviation enthusiasts from around the world.
