Sad, seems like they were just aviation students at that university.

Five Killed in Small Plane Crash in Indiana
Friday , April 21, 2006
http://oas.foxnews.com/RealMedia/ad...l/38363831393531363433333336663130?_RM_EMPTY_ BLOOMINGTON, Indiana — A small plane crashed in foggy conditions, killing all five people aboard, police said Friday.
Authorities believe students from Indiana University were among those on board, said Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Joe Watts.
Police believe a female was piloting the plane with four male passengers aboard.
The aircraft was en route to the Bloomington airport from Lafayette, Ind., about 90 miles (140 kilometers) to the northwest. Bloomington is home to Indiana University.
The plane disappeared from radar about midnight, Watts said. The wreckage was found just south of the Monroe County Airport about 4:15 a.m. EDT Friday, he said.
Authorities said the pilot activated the lights at the airport from the cockpit but never landed.
Officials at Hulman Field in Terre Haute, Indiana, which monitors the Monroe County Airport at night, informed emergency officials after the plane disappeared from radar, said Mike Cornman, deputy fire chief in Van Buren Township, Indiana.
Residents made an emergency call to report what sounded like a plane in distress, he said. Some reported hearing a loud boom.

That sucks. Anymore news? BR 2SM vis under a 300 OVC at midnight with 4 passengers? Yikes.....I don't think you'd see pilot controlled lights. Wonder what kind of approach she was trying to make.

As stated in the brief above, she was cleared for the ILS rwy 35.
Ya'll be careful out there.

Oh man that sucks! I wonder what the weather was when she took off for Bloomington! Condolances to the families and friends.

Part of me wants to know who it was...I know a few aviation guys over at IU!!

Indiana University does not have an aviation program.

Yeah, youre completely right... Brain fart, the guys I know go to ISU at HUF, well I dont even know if its actually at HUF....I just know thats where flight team was last October..

DOH!

Very sad, my condolences. It's especially sad when they have so much to live for and were on the up and up.

That's funny. A doctor was hacking a plaster cast off my arm and I asked him If I would be able to play the piano and he said yes. That liar...I wonder if I can sue for malpractice?

Exactly how does one obtain a "degree" in piano performance? Just curious.

Sad indeed. I wonder if they were traveling to and from performances. I have a degree in piano performance. It has always caught my attention how many pilots are musicians as well.

Pay some money to a college or university and get a B.M. or a B.A. concentrating in piano performance. That's how. It could be vocal performance, composition, pedagogy, theory, history, etc...take your pick. Mine was a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Studies with a concentration in piano performance. I did it for fun and kind of sucked cause I didn't practice enough. I can jam though and play some good jazz, bluegrass, you name it.

I also have a B.S. but don't know crap.

Cool...I didn't know you could actually major in a specific instrument. I figured it would be just a music degree or something. My mom is a kickass pianist...thats why I was wondering. I wish like hell now that she would have made me sit down and learn it as a kid. What a great talent.

So are we interested in why the 206 (Caravan?) crashed or how to play the piano? What was her experience? Sad that four others put their trust in her...and now?

Well, to be fair, they are saying that weather may have been instrumental in the crash.

Bruce Payton, director of Monroe County Airport, said weather may have played the biggest role in the crash.
"I can tell you this: Weather conditions were pretty bad," with fog and a mist that made for poor visibility when the plane was coming in to land, Payton said. The weather also slowed search efforts.

The Caravan is a 208. The 206 is a piston aircraft. A bigger fatter 182 which is a bigger fatter 172 which are very good flying airplanes.

factor or not...

I learned out of Terre Haute, and the Bloomington VOR seemed to only work part of the time. Not too sure if the ILS had the same issues. Could be something to that.

Pilot and plane were from South Bend. Someone at my local flight school looked up the certificate from the name in the paper. Only private ASEL and AMEL plus an instrument.

I agree with FN_FAL on this. Let's not jump to conclusions just yet.

whats your point? All thats telling me is that she was qualified to fly that plane in that weather, at least certificate wise.

I used to crank out commercial sign offs on the weekends between 10 day instrument students, like a "girls gone wild" chick flips off her bikini top. What's your point? Do you think a couple of chandelles, 8's on pylons and the aeronautical knowledge necessary to do bird watching and banner towing would have saved their bacon? Knowing that crap didn't do much for the 121 pilots in those two Missouri crashes, did it sonny?

As far as you or anybody knows at this point in time, the vacuum pump failed and suckered her in to the crash or a control cable snapped...to guess any further would be useless.

I was just replying to cappytans question. I guess my wording of "only" was of bad taste.
A word makes the difference. No big deal...I guess I owe you an opthalmology.

It was mentioned in an earlier post that the pax were musicians...that is what prompted the temporary hijack. So technically "we" are interested in both huh cappytan?

I understand the interest, was just making sure we don't miss the reason for the thread that a plane went down and "we", or at least some of us, might be interested as to why?
