despite a fear of being flamed; here's my JS story;
i was sort of laid off for 3 weeks last april and decided it'd be productive if i went to europe (non-rev).
i went to catch a 8 am spirit san juan to miami flight, but they had moved the departure up an hour and i just missed it. i'd planned to connect with atlas in miami and go to stansted in england.
i went home where i happened to call atlas, which was good because they didn't have any miami to england flights, just south america.
a few hours later i was back at sju trying to catch a caribbean sun flight to st marteen to get a cheap standy by fare on air france. it didn't work out on caribbean sun, which was just as well because air france ended up not really having any dirt cheap standy by fares.
i was wandering around sju, wondering what to do for 3 weeks, when a usairways pilot agreed to a ride to philly.
in philly, there were 7 flights leaving for europe in the next hopur or two. i went to the gate for the paris flight, but they said they already had a JSer and that i was SOL. i got on a flight to amsterdam and sat in the relief seat while the pilot talked to dispatch about giving me a ride. end result was 'no go'.
i stopped at the paris flight's counter for some trivial reason - to borrow a pen, etc, and they said they'd been paging me; their JS er didn't show, but the flight was leaving in five minutes and i was SOL. long story short; i got on.
A day later i was in madrid, proud of myself and feeling a little like while leo di caprio. i was standing outside the terminal and starting to worry about money, a capt got off a bus, outside the terminal, and he had a red white and blue tie on. i asked for a ride across the atlantic anywhere.
but it was no go with continental. ditto with delta. a CUBANA crew was just coming in, not going. i went to IBERIA dispatch and a capt agreed to a ride to santo domingo. i went through the terminal to catch the flight and the IBERIA gate agent said i should've stayed with the crew and that without a boarding pass i was SOL.
Fortunately USAIRWAYS came through with a flight to philly. i only had a small carry on, but had to check in at the counter. a security agent quizzed me for 20 minutes and finally let me go. the spanish security guard at the gate took a LONG time checking me and i had to catch my own bus to the plane. I was the last one to board. i had just sat down when the PA called asked me move (to first class).
i later told my boss about the upgrade and he said that that's a courtesy - and i said, yeah, I know, but no - they sat me next to the relief pilot to KEEP AN EYE ON ME!
so, there it is (the story)
i just read somewhere that JFK Sr thrived on risk
