Since I was duped by your question about the 55, I am suspicious about your inability to understand this, so this is it for you and me on this topic.

People hold Sweden up as an example of a socialist structure that we would do well to mimick. At least, socialists do this. They fail to factor in that Sweden does very little. Right now, we are manufacturing for them when we should have been manufacturubng for US all along. They have no world military power holding back evil. They sit and watch, they make porn, and they say "we are neutral". Any success they have is due to others, not their socialist ways.

It isn't "OK " to rely on other counties for commodities. We should be pumping our own oil, and building cars for companies that we own, and building them here. That would take a sensible environmental policy, tort reform, and some restraining of the ability of lawyers to sue companies based on wifty ideas like "harrassment". A gentleman doesn't harass anyone, but we no longer teach our sons to be gentlemen, and our daughters, ladies.

In the name of being progressive, we have set aside much of the rugged individualism that made us great. And with it, a lot of our common sense.

When SS started there were 16 working persons for each person on the take (ie a funded ratio of 16:1). It's now 2:1 and only getting worse as the population ages.

SS (et all) is remnant of a generation scared of the thought of another great depression. The paradigm shifted very abruptly from the classical economic theories of the pre-30s to the keynsian theories of the WW2-Carter era. It has been proven that SS and other government programs (all part of the keynsian fiscal policy) are not, and never will be, long term economically viable solutions. This will become more evident as time passes with foriegn (European) countries.

Monetary policy (Milton Freidman) is seemingly a very plausible solution to our economic woes. However, it is very transparent to society.

Therefore, untill we have true political reform, our country will be riddled with a hybrid monetary/fiscal policy.

After all, government programs win votes. And votes win power. And (most) politicians enjoy inebriation from power.

I will vote for GWB because I think he is sincere. He is politically motivated, this is certain. However, he is at home with more of the ideals I hold close to my heart than the likes of Dick Gephardt or Hillary Clinton or any of the other Dems talking heads could ever be, no matter how hard they try.
