Can anyone recommend a reasonable crew friendly hotel near IAH?

Try the Hampton Inn near the Deer Brook Mall. Fairly cheap, close to food and the mall. Transportation to the airport. Good luck.

The Hilton Garden Inn on JFK Blvd gives a crew rate. And it is a great hotel also...

I was at the Doubletree a couple of days ago. There were 3 airline crews that took the 0600am shuttle with me to the terminal.

That hotel was very nice, and was only a ten minute drive.
