I didn't know you loved your IPAD that much But, the way you described one pilot looking at their position on one IPAD, while the other shows the WX on the other IPAD.... sounds like it COULD be a problem.

WingX with inflight weather I haven't looked at this too closely yet but maybe this is an alternative. WingX has the terminal charts with geo reference but last I remember they didn't have the enroute.
Ultra, I know the GNS can't do XMWX. I was commenting that I doubt it will ever have the capability to do it. Sometimes it just requires someone to throw the right switch.

Bleeds, WingX WX is going to use the same XM Weather hardware solution that is provided by WXWorx that brings the data to the device.

And you are correct, do not ever expect a GNSS satellite receiver to have the capability to downlink data from XM's satellite. Completely different systems.

No, what I was getting at was... it was described as a possibile setup with one Ipad showing weather and the other showing GPS. I just see two pilots looking at Ipads too much comparing postion options. JMHO...relax guys!

No... I'm not new look at my profile...it's real! Aiming for high standards and the best equipment is what we SHOULD do right? I understand we can't always have that buddy, thanks for the dig.

I'm just saying that I flew an airplane with PL21 with XM and all the bells and whistled and I found guys heads-down flipping through screens as much as with the iPad.
It's not the equipment, it's work load management and the discipline to know when to stop info surfing and just fly the plane no matter what your using.

OK- maybe I'm not getting it... can someone confirm that wxworx, plus a bluetooth device allows you to use an ipad while in flight and get both positioning info and xm weather-- and if so, what kind of antenna is used and where is it best located? I'm finding it a little hard to believe that a couple thousand $ investment can do an end run around 100k+ installations...

Wadda, here is the deal:

1. WXWorx makes a box with a XM antenna.

2. This Box, hooked up to your EFB via serial OR bluetooth, will downlink weather FROM the XM satellite. The weather information is displayed on your device via WxWorks software.

3. External XM antennas can also be utilized which yields better reception as the XM satellite is southerly.

4. XM antennas do NOT provided GPS postion, as the XM satellite is NOT a GPS satellite.

5. WXWorx has announced a hardware solution that will enable it's WxWorx box to talk to the iPad. Available in a few months.

6. The WxWorx hardware is about a grand. Subscriptions costs vary, depending upon your need. The full-featured subscription is a grand per year.

Wadda, the external Comant/Comdat antennas run from about 400 to 700 bucks, depending up on style and if you want a combo XM/GPS antenna or XM only, or other combinations. There are several options available.

As far as installation, we're having ours installed during a routine inspection where access is already provided for, so can't get you a hard number on that, but it's aircraft/location specific anyway.

Thank you LJ45- but Ultra is talking about an ext Bluetooth GPS/XM Worx ant-- and I don't know if it can supply the current GPS info needed as well as for any position info on the Ipad (or whatever tablet)

Actually I'm not Wadda. The external XM antenna is NOT bluetooth. It's hardwired, and will have an outlet which the bluetooth XM box will plug into.

LJ45 is correct in-that you can get a combo antenna. You just need to check with your FSR to verify the GPS side of the antenna is compatible with your FMS's if your going to use it in that function.
