They usually land at a certain time in the morning or evening so you know if you hear one coming there are more right behind it for a few hours or so. Cant really say I can smell the fumes. I can see them retract their landing gear though. Noise is tolerable since watching them turn into base is worth it.
Hey, bro. When I was flying for Vanguard, we overnighted at the Sheraton Flushing. I always asked for a even numbered room on an upper floor. That put us directly in the path of planes on the Expressway Visual 31. I could leave the blinds open and watch airlines making the approach to the runway all night. Very cool.
I remember growing up five NM south of ORD. I would be playing in the back yard and when the 707's and DC-8's went overhead I could pretend I didn't hear my Mom calling me from the house. The sound was deafening. Now I live about five blocks from there, and even with the increased MDW traffic, I rarely hear a thing. No more excuses with the wife.
