Free markets do not destroy cartels, self interest does. In the long run individuals choose what is best for them and not the cartel.

What raises and drops salaries is elasticity. The more elastic your service, the less money you make. What determines elasticity, the number and closeness of substitute goods. In today's market there are a lot of pilots and airplanes not being used or are under utilized. Until those resources are maxed out, we are at current book value.

In order to make more money you need to provide a service that nobody else provides and find somebody that wants that service bad. Now you have the ability to demand your price. Then you are a monopoly.

Excellent post! However, I would point out that self interest and free markets are synonymous, as long as the government does not pick favorites, in which case you have economic fascism. Cheers! The Scab has spoken.

Not sure to whom you are responding, Guns, but you are correct. Heavily regulated Capitalism, rather than letting the Market with all its checks and balances balance things, is fascism.
 
When the airlines charge $2,500 for a round trip from NYC to FLA instead of $250, and $8,000 for a flight to Europe instead of $800, they will actually be able to make money and give substantial raises to their pilots. That will "trickle down" to all other parts of aviation. Of course, who knows if that day will ever come. Maybe when gas costs $20 a gallon.

Of course, the FAA funding bill requires an end to "see and avoid" as well know it within 4 years: they are REQUIRED to issue regulations allowing non-crewed drones in the federal airspace. How soon before airliners are flying with one pilot - on the way to flying with none sometime in the future?!?

and there will be two Transcontential flights each day, but those pilots will be well oaid

Got any further info on the future airspace stuff with drones and automation? Sounds like a good new thread, for sure!
