How will the airlines shakeout?

Hey guys,

There are a lot of smart folks on this board. I would appreciate your opinion.

Like to get a realistic view of how you think things will end up 3-5 years from now.

With airlines going bankrupt, and the industry in major crisis, things can not continue the way they are from a business point of view. The ticket prices in many cases represent 1950's pricing! Government is done handing out money, yet has increased ticket taxes significantly.

Considerations/Questions:
(Reregulation of industry, consolidation/merger, will capital markets dry up for airlines... lots of other places for shareholder to put their money, airlines going chapter 7, etc)

I believe that perhaps one legacy will go out of business or be down sized and absorbed. Consolidation makes some sense as it will be tough on the remaining carriers as they are attacked by low cost competition on one hand and international competitors taking advantage of the weakness.

There is little or no chance of re regulation at this point. The public has not been harmed by this except for some small communities which lost service.

When you think of airlines -- think of the bug zappers in the back yard. Bug after bug sees their friends hit the zapper and perish. The carcuses are right at the bottom. Still, more and more come and fly into it. They never learn.

The aviation industry is the same.
