With the Majors at a stand still - infact a backward motion-flowing down to the Regional Airlines- and no look in the near future of bringing furloughs back to the Majors - (6-7 years to pull all Furloughs back imho) - You will have some retirements- but very little movement if at all at United-American- Delta- Northwest - Continental-US Airways- Alaska- America West- -- And an increase in Regional Jets at ASA-ACA-COEX-Comair-etc. - The regionals will be hiring - But it will be very competitive- wages are increasing at the regionals - they are now starting to get retirement plans- and are flying better routes all thru the U.S. Canada and Mexico- Many Military Pilots are now looking at the regionals for jobs - the majors are not hiring- Furloughed pilots from United and US Airways are also looking for jobs - not knowing if they will ever return to thier airlines-- What do you think a competitve number of flight hours and equipment will be?? - Do you believe that pay for training will rear its ugly head? There will no longer be 400 hour flight instructors being hired into the Regionals- Where will the bar be placed?--- Max

AirInc

I think they said at the last AirInc seminar that competitive requirements (not minimum -- competitive) for large regionals, ACA, Comair, SkyWest, etc...was well north of 3000 hrs with prior 121 and turbine experience.

Quals

I would have selected Choice No. 1 but felt it a bit extreme while not out of the question.

I'd say no less than 2500 total, 500 multi, ATP, turbine, and 135/previous 121 experience (Don't forget having a parent or uncle who knows the Chief Pilot  ). This is like ten years ago, only far worse. The crowds of furloughees and military willing to fly for regionals are exacerbating this unfortunate situation.

Bad news for those, like me, with only instructing experience. :( Best of luck to all.

you're fooling yourself if you don't think an ATP will be a minimum competitive benchmark- I don't even think you will get a call with a logbook full of piston time-single or multi- the airlines can pick and choose- they don't want to pay any extra training cost- they want a garuntee that it will be a one time shot through training - And the majority of the training will be done in the CRJs and ERJS- most of the props are being replaced with the jets. - and the guys that posted 1000 hrs as minimum- "step away from whatever your drinking- those days are gone" - Max

Total time is just the price of admissio

N. I truly believe (from experience) that what will get you a job (beyond flight time) is the willingness to effectively network. Make all the contacts you can and work every one of them. Pilots are great contacts, as are ramp guys, A&Ps, counter workers at the FBOs, dispatchers, etc. Any and all involved in aviation.

The job I have now, I got the interview through the Director of Maintenance at my old job, who knew an A&P for a guy that needed a first officer. I would have never guessed that developing and maintaining a good relationship with my former DoM would lead to a great job, but it did. So my advice is get good experience and make sure everyone that you come into contact with in this business would recommend you for the jobs that they hear about.

I know women and minorities are still getting interviews and offers with 1000 to 1500 hours. So what do you think will be the future of hiring for gals over guys? My friend says any white male with less than 2500 hours can basically find a second job for now because their job prospects are not good.
But women pilots I know are not doing so bad. Sad but its true.
