they have classes scheduled at least through March regardless of the ATA deal.

Just something to keep in mind if you're in the pool...if indeed some kind of merger comes to pass, seniority issues could have a profound effect on new hires. If you are now in the pool and you get a class date and before you start a formal offer is made and ultimately accepted, it is quite possible that the date of the offer will become very important in establishing seniority. A lot depends on how the arbitrator sees it, but it's something to keep in mind. Because if your AWA class date is after the day they make an offer, you could wind up on the bottom below everyone, the incoming ATA folks included. Not to spread FUD or anything, but it's just something to factor into your decision making process. That's why I've been saying you really want to get on the property before anything formal is accounced.

In the AA/TWA merger the effective date was the actual closing of the deal, several months after the initial announcement.

A few years ago while the proposed UAL/AAA merger was under discussion we were told that it could go down a number of ways, including the closing of the deal or when the initial offer was accepted.

Bus Babe,

Thanks for the info. This is getting interesting for sure.

Reepicheap,

Have there been any mergers in the past in which list integration went from date of announcement, not date of closing? I'm admittedly weak on my history on this subject. It seems like date of the deal closing would be the date to be worried about. Regardless, the ball is rolling now and we're along for the ride.

PositiveRate,

I'm sorry I can't answer for sure. I know that seniority integration has run the gamut, depending on the situation. AA/TW was basically, you're going down, you're lucky to have a job with us at all, so most of you go to the bottom. When Delta bought part of PanAm as they were going down, they took only certain pilots on certain equipment, irrespective of seniority. USAir/Piedmont was straight DOH with some restrictions, but there you had two healthy (at the time) carriers. You end up in court with some judge and he has some latitude, within the gudelines, to decide the issue. Of course another possibility is that AWA could make the deal contingent on a certain method of integration, take it or leave it.

At this point all we can do is wait and see. I do think that if AWA makes an offer and it's accepted, you are entering uncharted waters if you start a class at AWA after that date. How'd you like to get assigned to MDW?

When Delta bought part of Pan Am some of the guys at Pan Am were supposedly tipped a month early and quickly bid down from the 747 left seat to the Pan Am Shuttle 727 left seat. They were eventually included in the aquisition, and then immediately bid up to the DL 767-ER International left seat out of JFK. There was some sort of seniority swap involved. Those guys were called the "dirty thirty." (I guess 30 747 Captains did it)

Reepicheep, do you even want to get a class date from AWA?

Absolutely, I'm ready to start tomorrow. But it would be foolish not to consider the possiblilites. I know; I've been around the block a few times. Look like we'll know more in a few weeks.

Rather than debate the “what ifs for new hires in the event of a merger” [I’m not even sweating that] here are a couple of thoughts for the folks waiting to hear about class dates and aircraft choices.

The class that started on Monday, 15 Nov was 6 for 6 to the 757 (one guy is a sim instructor in that class ??). For all the new hires it was 757 period dot. When I showed up, it was 8 for 8 to the Airbus in Vegas. Bus Babe is right on Vegas being staffed. I think the number is 75 Captains and 76 FOs to Vegas for the domicile to open in late January (so right now it is technically full). I “heard” that there was going to be a bid for open Captain slots in PHX next month and of course that could stir the pot some. Some Captains and FOs who were “assigned” Vegas in the domicile bid (and later training classes) would probably like to opt back to PHX which would generate new hires to the Bus going straight to Vegas. If that pattern continues to hold, Vegas might be the quickest way to hold a line. Vegas is only Airbus right now, so if you get a 737 or 757 you’d live/sit reserve in PHX. If there is a mix of jets in your class, senior guy (age) gets to pick, and on down in order. Individually evaluate what’s important to you when making “what jet” decision if you have a choice. With mixed jets, you would split up after the first two weeks and do separate academics/sims from then on. I haven’t heard about firm January dates, TWA dude is the man in the know on that so maybe he can post it. Hang in there if you are waiting/applying. At the five week point, I can tell you that AWA is a great place and I’m real happy to be there. Training department is first rate. Dudes/dudettes are smiling!

Mk 82

Same can be said once out on the line.Although there may not be as much smiling once the "honeymoon" is over;) , the guys and gals that I have flown with in both the 737 community and now the Airbus are an absolute pleasure to fly with ....very very few egos and attitudes, just a bunch of people who want to go out and get the job done and have a good time while doing it. Kinda makes for a nice day at the office. Now if we can only figure out how to make this thing pay:rolleyes:

Glad to see you're enjoying your new position here
