I start class in two weeks at CAL and will probably be in EWR on the 737 or 756. How much longevity does it take to be a lineholder (above the G-line) for each model? Thanks!

With the ammount of hiring (16-20 a week) I would guess not too long in EWR on the 737. Maybe 3-4 months at most, by summer for sure. I am in IAH (737, started in March) and am still on reserve, only by a few. At the rate of hiring I would guess you would be on reserve far less than me!

Good luck, I hear a few 777 slots are comming soon...................

The class that started yesterday was all 737 (16), I think 6 IAH 10 EWR.

I was hired in April on the 737 in EWR, and I have I think I will get off reserve for December. The junior line has fallen about 15-20 numbers before the G-line. It might be a little shorter now because I was hired just before the summer slow down in hiring.

I really dont know much about the 757 or IAH but I would guess that reserve time would be longer but that is just a guess because newhires are going it IAH 737 and EWR on the 756 as well.

Good Luck in Class.
The 737 beats the tar out of the RJ to fly.

I was hired 1 week behind Flatspin and am obviously also still on reserve in EWR. End of November will be 5 solid months. Then again, they only hired 8/month after us until September. So my guess is that anyone hired today will only be on reserve in EWR on the 737 for 6-8 weeks given that they are hiring 64/month right now.

And I disagree with Flatspin on the RJ vs. 737. Each has its positives over the other one. I definitely thought the 737 would have been quieter up front. If the 737 had a hot mic I'd be back to wearing my Bose X's. It is one loud cockpit! Now that 757...wow...that is the real deal right there.

Thanks to all. I'm glad to be near the beginning of the mass hiring boom. Can any 757 guys or gals chime on the longevity of the bottom lineholders? I think I'd like to bid the 756, but practicality says go for the 737 so I can get back to IAH sooner.

FWIW,
If you want IAH bid the 737, I have been hear since January and I can't hold 756 IAH yet. I don't know how junior the 756 IAH will go on the next bid but we have not been adding any new 75's or 76's so the 756 in IAH is pretty slow going.

What is reserve like on the 756 in EWR?? I understand the 73 guys get used alot, but wasn't sure about 756... Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Neal,

You made it to the majors and you're already bitchin', huh? :D

Hope you're having fun over there in Joisey!

Across the river in Flushing (appropriately named!),

Not b-tching at all! Just stating the facts. And I'm not Joisey...on the UES across the east river from you. Come on in and let's get a cold one...

Neal,

Gotta disagree with you on the noise. Maybe all that Emb flying made you deaf. 737 noisy - Yes .... Noise comparable in any way, shape, or form with RJ - Nope.

From a pure handling perspective however, I'd have to say the E-145 was a pretty tight little machine.

Classics are loud down low at anything over 300 indicated. it roars and is just as loud as the RJ. NGs are pretty quiet. 756 and 777 guys say the 737 is much, much louder than those.

another reason to bid over? maybe someday.

i don't know... I don't care what model 737 you're it, it's still not as loud as the Emb. Even the main cabin, row 10 is on the Emb is louder than the 737 cockpit. Besides, that Econ cruise at .70 Mach is nice and quiet (and a money-maker to boot!).

I thought it was flu-shing. Atleast at the Roosevelt and Main area. Holy cow, I was the only round eye walking around there most of the time.

The ERJ is only loud without a headset...I wore a Bose X so it was whisper quiet for me. How do you fly .70 in econ? We are limited to cost index of 15 right now.

I have been on the 756 in EWR for 6 months (with the company for 8).

I dequal for 90 day landing currency in 11 days.

Sincerely,

B. Franklin

.70 / .72, what's the difference? The point is with Econ/C.I. 15 we are cruising at slow speeds. While I haven't taken a survey, it seems to me the the 300's & 500's general cruise in the .70 to .74 range in Econ/C.I.15.

Not trying to pick a fight, just saying that the 737 may be louder than the 757 but it's much quiter than the Emb. I can't believe that we're even discussing it.

you are in a good postion......no matter where you end up or what equipment

we have a bid in january in which you could change base opr equipment(except you can't down bid so keep this in mind)ie 777fo to 737 fo.you can bid up from 737 fo or change bases realtively easy though

you should notify scheduling.....they wil get you your landings

plan on FL turns or the dub-snn wrap

I've notified scheduling. The CPO has made 3 requests to the scheduling sup. on my behalf to schedule some flying.

Is there anything else that you recommend I do to get some flying on my schedule?

Thanks.

I was just wondering...not picking a fight. :D I guess while I like the 737 for some things, I dislike it for others...it definitely isn't the panacea of airliners. Now that 757....

My only issue with the noise is that it can be hard to have a normal conversation at a normal volume since there is no hot mic/intercome setup. The 757 is a night and day difference. The ERJ is definitely a louder cockpit but since most wear clamps, the noise isn't really the issue...its the annoyance of wearing clamps.

But I think we both agree this is a silly topic to discuss. :D

I ABSOLUTELY do not get this. Why on earth doesn't Boeing have a hot mike selectable on their intercoms? Airbus and every other airplane manufacturer does. It's a safety issue. It's so much easier to hear your counterpart in the cockpit during high workload events with a hotmike rather than screaming.

Boeing is 50 years behind the times with their current set up (unless the 777 has it (?))

Umm, there is a hot mic selector on the 737, all models! The PTT switch on the yoke is a 3 place switch. Push the top for R/T, push the bottom for I/T, release and it spring loads to the center off position. Also, on the audio control panel for the CA, FO, and j/s there is a 2 place switch clearly marked I/T and R/T. You can adjust the volume on the ACP's. It is how the CA talks to the ground crew. If you want to where clamps, Neal, you can and use the "hot mic" switch as described above, but lets face it, you just wanna sound cool keying the mic wearing the plantronics and sounding like your in a wind tunnel! ;-)

Cheers

P.S. I know I'm a wise-ass!
