Ok here it goes:

This is not bs, because i am the one the story is about, just thought it might help some of you out!

I have been flying since a kid and always dreamed of being a pilot (wtf was i dreaming?)... Get hired at an airline my busting my tail flying charter and all that jazz not my traffic patterns...Upgrade not happening so i bail out...2nd airline class started in march a few years ago, took cough syrup w/ codeine in it that was in my home medicene cabnit, Hell.. i didn't look to see who it was, wasn't going to be in the air much less did not even think about. Fail pre-emply drug test and now a year and a half later after spending more than it cost me to learn to fly and knowing a u.s. senator i now finnaly have my medical back after it was revoked from the faa. Now don't go telling me that i should have hired a lawyer and done this or done that, because i happen to be kin to one of the best out there, and had two more criminal defense attys on my side also. Bottom line guys and gals, please watch what you take out there and do not take your mommys or daddys or jr's f'n medicine. "If you admit to and take someone else's precription med's you are deemed a substance abuse user by the FAA". Quote from the judge in my federal trial!!!

yeah, like the time i was at my moms house for a holiday and i had a headache, my mom said she had some asprin, she went to get the pills from her bathroom, and handed me two of them, luckily i did not have a drink with me right away otherwise i would have downed them quick......

As i was grabbing a mt dew, she said they were the best, they were from canada and were called 1,2.3's or something......they had like codine, tylonal and asprin! I was like..."what!?" codine, "mom, i will fail a piss test, i cannot take these!" i gave them back and did not take them

the moral of the story.......it is either do not trust your mom, or watch what you take for medications! your choice!

...and pretty much everywhere else in the world too.

I just took a piss test the other day for my new job. Before the test they asked me if I wanted to volunteer if I was on any percription meds.

If you took cough syrup w/ codine prior to a piss or a blow test and you tell the tester in advance could that save your job?

Also why does codine equal out of a job if it is a goverment approved OTC drug? Also what is the FAA doing about this?

A friend of mine is a drug tester here in PHX for AWA/US Airways. I'm sure some of you "Cactus" drivers know him well when you see him standing in the jetway smiling! So I'll ask him for some further clarification.

In the United States, codeine is regulated by the Controlled Substances Act. It is a Schedule II controlled substance for pain-relief products containing codeine alone. In combination with aspirin or acetaminophen (paracetamol) it is listed as Schedule III. Codeine is also available outside the United States as an over-the-counter drug (Schedule V) in liquid cough-relief formulations. Internationally, codeine is a Schedule II drug under the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.[2]
In the United Kingdom, codeine is regulated by the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971; it is a Class B Drug.
In Australia, New Zealand and Canada, codeine is regulated, however it is available without prescription in combination preparations from licensed pharmacists in doses up to 15 mg/tablet (8 mg/tablet in Canada).

Not Over the Counter (OTC) drug in the United States.

You should have looked at it as a easy way out of the shi$$y business!!! But wait, get out of aviation????? Nooooooooo Way!!!!! I love this abuse!!!

If you had so much power behind you, why did it take a year and a half? This incident shows that there are a lot of stupid people out there.

Yes you can buy it over the counter butt i admittied to taking it otherwise...

I only took one dose and there was just varley enough to show up...

Codeine is a very low tolerance...

Anyway for the few of you that want to be a smartass, I love it!!! We ain't all a f'n boy scout when we leave the house. Yes Had I known what codeine was i wouldnt have taken it. first of all did not look at it, second never when to pharmacy school. So some of us are humans and have lifes outside of work so we make mistakes. But, for the serious people on this board, i hope none of ya'll espc. with a family make a mistake like this in the future.

Self medicating with schedule III narcotics? You deserve what happened to you.

Senator? Too bad you didnt just know a doctor who could have written you a prescription and saved you the entire hassle. If legitimately sick or injured, you are allowed to take codeine, percocets, darvons, even pure morphine as long as a doctor writes you a note for it and you don't attempt to fly until all effects have worn off, incuding the withdrawals if you get addicted to the drug.

Islandhopper, that would have been just as bad because a doctor cannot backdate his log as well. The new prescription would have been after the fact. I was prescribed the same med the day of, and before I was notified by the a.m.e. Also I was nowhere near an airplane, does not bother me just wanting to let fellow pilots know that bad stuff can happen when you don't think they can or will.

Yes you can get this over the counter in my state as well. But, when you admit and be honest you cannot change your remarks later on. The reason it was drawn out in court is because somepeople do not just give up and quit. I choose to pursue this all the way to the top as opposed to just throwing my cards in. It paid off because I can now fly again as opposed to what was given to me if I had choose not to continue it.

Actually, you can get cough syrup with codiene in it otc in the US. Robitussin AC (class V) - all you do is sign the log...worked in a pharmacy for years.

What do I keep telling you guys, zip up the pie hole until you've had a chance to speak to a legal professional.
