Wow!! A Guy called me about ferrying a Bellanca 17-31TC from BLI to LRU First he wanted to ride along I told him sorry ferry flights are solo. As I am calculating the labor rate he is sitting there whistling like he is bored? This took me only a two to three min as its not a common airplane. I gave him a rate of $500.00 Labor + Expenses & Travel Costs. The guy asked how much for expenses & travel costs? I asked him for an estimated time of when or what day he would be needing the aircraft delivered as there are so many variable in calculating expenses, you know aircraft equipment, weather, transportation costs, etc.

He insisted that I give him a set fixed expense costs I tried to explain avain that there are so many variables in calculating expenses I need this information. He interrupted, "you probably ferry thousands of airplanes just give me a set cost for expenses you should know these" I continued to tell him depends on weather, routing, and transportation costs the day you would like to have it done and how the aircraft is equipped there are to many variables. I can give you an estimate on how much the expenses would be but it will not be an exact figure. He said don't give me that horse sh*t! I said thank you and hung up the phone.

What would you have done?

I would have just given him a large figure for expenses. As it was, you were going to lose the sale anyway, so why not make an offer that would benefit you and he may accept?

Then again maybe you don't want to be dealing with a guy like that anyway.

I would have told him to kiss my ass !

Raise the rates is a good idea. If he was that demanding on first call up, I would not want to come back with revised expenses.

If he cant afford your time or the expenses so be it. My prices would also be higher if he was difficult.

Why do you insist on solo? If you are a CFI he could log the time. Maybe charge extra for dual deliveries.

No, I am not a CFI. I do solo's because usually if the owner comes along they become a distraction & usually cannot hold their bladder as long as I know I can causing unnecessary stops & delays. Time is money!!

I had one flight that I took a owner I tried to explain to him yes your airplane is IFR equipped but it is not certified so no we cannot take off in the fog it should be VFR in about 2 to 3 hours! He thought I was just delaying to make more money as I was charging him by the hour for that flight. Also when they find out that they have to pay double ever thing 2 motel rooms, meals, etc. It’s a big shock to their pocket book.
