How does your question differ from those commuting on their own time in the airline industry. What if you can't get a jumpseat and don't make it to your starting point on time?

I believe a lot of airline contracts have a "commuter policy" that protects pilots from action if they can prove they failed to make a certain number of flights to work...

Anyhow, this entire thread has boiled down to this:

If NJA is for you then you either:
a) Move all your sh*t to one of the 5 bases
b) Try the commute bit

Oh give me a break. Last year NJ was paying its pilots nearly identical wages to some regionals. I went to a regional last year because they paid better than NJA, plus travel benefits and a commuter policy for commuting pilots. You guys are paid better now but it wasn't always like that. Amazing how you can forget how low your pay was just six months ago.

Look, this I know a little about. I have a close friend here who is doing this successfully. He is waiting until the end of the last day to do this. Has not had any problems so far. Seems most of the tickets travel books are refundable.

As for the contract, I know the sections that I need to quite well. These sections do not affect me and if they ever do I know where to look.

The information/suggestion I gave initially regarding not having to move to work here is a viable option for some. I have met several folks on the road who didn't even know it was possible.

Yeah, it would be that part I wrote about knowing the parts that affect me (such as 19 and 28). I don't know what the rules are on maternity leave either. Suppose I better get studying.

Once again you have distorted things. I tried to give an alternative to moving. I blew the fly from home for training and the 30% rule, mostly because I am not affected.
The fact still remains that you do NOT have to move to a base. And once again since you have a short/selective memory, there are a lot of folks out there who are not aware of the options available.

Now the chances are that you are really an NJA pilot in hiding who is trying to get others to not come here (there is an effort by some to do this to try and force the company to suffer by lack of recruitment), but some folks would really just like to have the information.

Well for a guy like you making 6 figures it may seem like an option.. Seems pretty pathetic to me though. But hey, it's a small price to pay for the cool ties and unlimited Rudy's Catering. :erm: I used to have to eat that crap airborne when I was flying the Hawker on quick turns out to the west coast and back. I believe I'd rather use the per diem to get the heck out of First Aviation and over to the Sea Shack for some decent food rather that scraping it together for pay for a self funded fly-from-home deal that could get my arse fired.

Luckily we can CHOOSE to pay for our own food in those instances.
As for being fired, they generally keep the good ones so I can see why you would be concerned.
For the record, doing your own commuting is not the "illegal" covert op you are making it out to be. You get there the night before and just like anything else you may do in life someday you might not make it in time. You may drive to an interview someday and your car breaks down 10 miles away and you are just as screwed. Get over it.
