Skydiving only seems extreme if you're not doing it.
I have to agree with this. Now having said that, I did my first solo jump today Avbug. Missed the landing spot by about 30 yards, but still did a stand up landing! # 2 tomorrow(hopefully).

Blue Skies, black death, and congratulations.

It's not about the thrill...it's about the freedom. Wuffo's will never understand that.

Whoa. Do you have any information at all about the wingsuit landing? I'd love to learn more. I rustled up Google, but could only find this page about a guy who is planning to attempt one (on skis) this winter.

Vnugget,

you could register with the www.dropzone.com forum and ask questions there...

recently this was discussed on their forum:

HERE

I wish I had a copy of a friend's video of wingsuit basejumps in the Fjords in norway. Jumping off 3,000ft cliffs...flying around the corner out of site, down glacial lakes at sunset. It is just a beautiful snapshot of the freedom of flight.

I have a friend that has the same video of himself jumping the Fjords in Norway on several different trips, including wearing a winged suit . He also base jumped the Eiger. He's base jumped that big hole down in Mexico on several trips. He's base jumped Angel Falls several times. Various antenna structures. Cliffs. He also base jumped the building in Chicago, where the HOUSE OF BLUES is located. For those familiar with that building, it's not all that high.

Last but not least, there's the New River Gorge bridge down in Beckley, WV. It was the worlds longest SPAN bridge, up until last year. I went down there with Jeff and friends and made my first base jump. 876 feet of adrenaline. I returned the following year and made two more jumps off of that bridge in Beckley, wearing video and audio gear, and was featured for a segment in the Fox Family reality television show called "Action Television". I was told that show aired in over 20 countries.

As I watched Jeff's video of his winged suit dive off the Fjord, I noticed he had quite a bit of control with it, but it took about 2 seconds of freefall before he had enough speed to start forward movement...then he took off like a jet. Plus there is the advantage of extending free fall time.

I have never jumped a winged suit, but I have a feeling I'm going to have to give it a try. Out of an airplane...not off of some danged rock. And I have never heard of anyone landing a winged suit...even that guy that flew the English Channel with rigid wings recently, had to use a parachute to land.

Avbug...you gotta try to make the bridge next year. I'm trying to get a group together from my dropzone. It's the bunny hill of base jumping and you can use your sport jumping rig (preferably without the cypress installed). You just have to pack good, pack slider up and with the slider duct taped across the center (or a mesh slider) and you have to get a larger "base" pilot chute with longer bridle (available at the bridge for purchase or you can buy one in advance on line).

I'd love to attend Bridge Day. I'd also like to make it to Oshkosh one of these years but I've been trying to go since it was at Rockford (for those that remember). Unfortunately, that's typically my busiest time of year. A snowball has a better chance of surviving a Kiln than I do making it, unfortunately.

There's another bridge, albiet not so high, that's in use in Idaho that friends are always jumping. One of these days. I don't get to jump much as it is, and I'm hardly getting my money's worth out of reserve pack jobs. Five jumps on the last pack, one rig. Not hardly enough.

I also just relocated to a place where they can't even spell parachute. If I can get someone to pull the door off a Cessna, I'll be a happy camper.

If I recall correctly the inventor of the wingsuit said they were working on refining it to a point where you'd need no parachute to land, just glide it on in, without a slope...

That would be way crazy, but I could see someone working on something like that. After seeing the video provided at the begining of the thread, I wouldn't want to be the first person to try to land one though.

Speaking of skydiving, I have been trying to sell a rig for a year now. Here goes:

Javelin OJ C-19 Harness and Container
Black with Red and Purple
Heat Wave 135 Main
Micro Raven 150 Reserve (all mods done)
Cypres fresh from 2 yr service Mfd 1998
Take it all for $2,850

Have a bunch of camera gear and jumpsuits as well.

If you are jumping a 135 square foot main, your rig is too small for my lard ass. Sorry I can't take up your offer, the price seems really fair.

Hey Bart, is there any chance you would have a suit to fit someone who is, say, oh I don't know, maybe 6'3" and 250 lbs.? For a friend of course!
