Of course, we often forget the real history, but pilots had a pretty good chance of dying on the job back then. Have you read Fate is the Hunter by Earnest Gann? He spends the entire book interspersing his personal stories with listings of all of his newhire classmates who died in this or that accident. They earned every cent of their pay! (Excellent book, by the way).

If you're looking for some good stuff, don't stop with Fate is The Hunter.. Ernest K. Gann turned out a ton of great books.. on flying and the sea.
