Can anyone in here explain how a Virgin Airlines A340 "accidentally" had 7500 in the box and got intercepted and diverted to Canada today? Is it not a push button transponder? WTF?

Didn’t that just happen less then a year ago to a major us airline... heard they were asked to land after atc didn't believe that it was just a mistake and taken to a remote area... i know some FMS's have a tune feature that allows tuning of all the comms, navs, adf, and transponder aswell as a memory list for each. I've seen 1200,7700,7500 under the stored transponder memory list so it wouldn't take much finger fumbling to select one of them…

I like how CNN reported the transponder code for all terrorists to hear.

...or how the FAA has published this in AIM for the last 30+ years. Go unscrew your head out of the ceiling and drink a beer.

was going eastbound yesterday morning while this was going on - gander was giving re-routes around the virgin's track to keep everyone clear. sounded like it happened when he switched from 2000 to the assigned code when coasting in.

What CNN did was report the code words that had been used for more than 30 years to covertly report a hijacking between the cockpit and cabin. The code words have now been changed.

Great, I shall probably get the memo at work in about 9 months....

if your talking about the T word.. that word is no longer a way to convey a hijacking nor are the commonly known flap and light positions for armed intervention.

T word still being briefed as a means of conveyance at the Centers.

Have not heard of any new code words.
