I like many guys my age fight High blood pressure. I was wondering if anyone on the panel has any suggestions regarding keeping blood pressure down without meds?

"your age", can't tell from the pic how old you are, and you did not say.

wait; your profile says born in '73. I'd say there are lots. Did your dr give you diet and medication recommendations? Any hi BP in your family history?

First and foremost, anything you do should be coordinated with your physician.

Having said that, high blood pressure, aside from physiological and pathological causes, may be psychologically induced; stressors in your life may be artificially inflating it. Remove the stressors, and lower your blood pressure.

Avoid stress. That sounds ovbious, but it's harder to do. Let things slide off of you.

Tai Chi. Aikido. I can't recommend that highly enough. Practice breathing. We've all done it since birth, but few are truly good at it. As a long time severe chronic asthmatic, I can attest to the fact that breathing is far more than drawing air in and expelling it out again. It's the rhythem of your life. Blood pressure can be deeply affected by breathing and meditation, which are inseparably linked.

Get a fish tank. Watch the fish often. That's a proven technique; it also works.

Watch your diet. Start by getting rid of soft drinks, caffeine, coffee, chocolate, etc. Only do this in consultation with your physician.

Remember not to take anything too seriously, including life. You're not getting out of it alive anyway. So, relax.

take what you do seriously, but dont take yourself seriously.

Have some sense of humor....

I have to say, I know a lot of professionals, and for some reason pro pilots seem to fall into 2 cats: anal assholes and crazy motherfookers.

Be a crazy mother...you will live longer.

My dad died from a heartattack at 59.7 3 months before he got the water and retired from DAL. Only after 2 divorces did he take himself less serious. It was too **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** late i guess. Funny thing he passed all of his 6 month physicals without a hitch. Its a silent killer. Of course having gooks shot at you when your flying an A-1 might have nipped a few years from him, however he had fond memories of those years.

I am too fat for my age, 30 240lbs @6.1FT im a big guy and it runs in my family. I have borderline BP, I know i have to find something more physical to do in my lesiure instead of play computer games.

**CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**it! I quess ill start walking to the bar...

what is going on with the censor? I think i said heel or something. **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**ing anal assholes running this thing...

I see you have a couple instructor certificates...

My best advice would be to quit teaching student pilots! You'll see a dramatic drop in blood pressure afterwards. Although life may become less interesting.

High blood pressure is simply elevated pressure of the blood in the arteries. Hypertension results from two major factors, which can be present independently or together....
The heart pumps blood with excessive force.

The body's smaller blood vessels (known as the arterioles) narrow, so that blood flow exerts more pressure against the vessels' walls.

Although the body can tolerate increased blood pressure for months and even years, eventually the heart may enlarge (a condition called hypertrophy), which is a major factor in heart failure and something u wanna avoid . Such pressure can also injure blood vessels in the heart, kidneys, the brain, and the eyes.

Health dangers from blood pressure may vary among different age groups and depending on whether systolic or diastolic pressure (or both) is elevated. A third measurement, pulse pressure, is becoming important as an indicator of severity:

High diastolic pressure (the second and lower number) is a strong predictor of heart attack and stroke in young adults and in people of any age with essential hypertension . This is high blood pressure from unknown causes and occurs in the great majority of cases.

You should consult your physician and take advice from this message board with a grain of salt. avbug has given some great advice as always, keep the stress levels down and monitor your diet extemely closely. Blood pressure can be lowered by doing different things but some of the easiest and most basic ways can be done without medications.

Alcohol, Coffee, and Cigarettes are no good and stay clear of them
An estimated 10% of hypertension cases are caused by alcohol abuse (ie, three alcoholic drinks a day or more, with heavier drinkers having higher pressure). Moderate drinking (one or two drinks a day) has benefits for the heart and may even protect against some types of stroke. Red wine specifically may have chemicals that benefit blood pressure. (Red grape juice may have the same advantages)

Caffeine causes a temporary increase in blood pressure, which has been thought to be harmless in people with normal blood pressure. Drinking coffee also increases excretion of calcium, which also may affect blood pressure.

Temporary high blood pressure can result from a number of other conditions or substances.
Stress.

Intense workouts (eg, snow shoveling, jogging, speed walking, tennis, heavy lifting, heavy gardening).

Long-term consumption of large amounts of licorice.

Exposure to even low levels of lead also appears to cause hypertension in adults.

weight, family history, emotional factors also seem to play a role in this.. Best advice is to consult a medical professional who can better assist and guide you and help you closely monitor this.

If you catch it early and keep close tabs on it then you should be able to keep it under control but to "gamble" on not seek professional help is not overly smart in my opinion. Some medications you will be on short term and once your BP is under control then the doc will take you off of them in many cases.

depends on many variables..

see a dr-

Rumor,

You did not give your age, but jogging does the trick. Although it is not as easy as it used to be :)

If age or weight makes jogging difficult, just taking a daily walk around the neighborhood will do a lot more than you think. My Dad struggles with high blood pressure also and the biggest factor for him is a daily walk (He is 64). As long as he does it his pressure stays much lower, if he starts to get lazy and skip his evening walks his pressure takes a big jump. However, as always, check with you Doctor prior to starting any exercise routine, especially if you are overweight.

Try to get rid of stress also. For me, when I quit having to commute that dropped my BP some! Fishing also helps!! ;)

Take a look at what you are doing everyday, If it mostly involves sitting in front of the TV or posting on Flight info, there is your problem.

DISCLAIMER!!!! I am not, and never will be a Doctor!! So take what I say with a grain of salt!!!

eat less carbs and more white meats (meats that swim or fly) and walk EVERY DAY, one hour, at slightly faster that "at the mall" pace. Pick a park, or some quiet streets in your neighborhood, etc.

you can also jog but sometimes your weight/knees/etc may prevent that without injury. If you are going to jog, just run for like 10 minutes, every other day, for a MONTH, then upgrade to 14, then maybe 16, finally within 6 months tiime frame you should be running 30-45 minutes every other day.

if not, stick to walking

drink sh1tloads of water, not the city water from the tap, but the 99 cent gallon purified water in the grocery store.

No smoking, no drinking, not much coffee.

try this for 6 months and get back to us
