Looks like NWA no longer requires hats.

The new generation pilot comes to work with backpacks (student image, still learning), ipods and way kewl sunglasses. The Chief Pilot doesn't dare question female grooming. I've seen better hair styles than the cover of Cosmo....

My FO turns off his ipod, pulls down his way-kewl shades and says....

"When are we going to get the respect, pay and recognition back? You know the whole reason why we signed up for this job....."

I look at him and say, " you want repsect but you won't even wear you hat"

"What's that got to do with it" he says...

"Don't worry about it....go back to your ipod"

should have been a cargo flyer--we get soo much respect from the company and the rest of the industry?

(jumpseating---
pax capt: so when do you think you will hang up your cargo hat and start flying commercial?
me: (thinking--how good is the next contract, maybe 60, wait--maybe earlier...smiling...) I don't know maybe I'll keep doing the box hauling a little longer...who knows (smiling)

This career isn't going to get better until the pay gets so bad, and work rules are so bad, that it drives pilots out; and until it becomes so well known that the job sucks that no self-respecting college boy pursues the career. We've all read the comments of certain ex-military pilots to the effect that the low pay and bad conditions are making a lot of them reconsider their plans to exit and/or to just come out and get into something besides flying. Now if the civilians catch on and stay away the pay will start back up. Then of course, those wannabees will break out the resumes and we'll start the cycle all over again.

I'm afraid that the appearance standards will stay low as long as regional FO pay stays below poverty level. Those guys carry back packs because they can't affordTUMI.

Good Luck to all,
8N

Automation won't care how many seats are in back, nor will it care about hats, pukka shell necklaces, penny loafers, getting laid, biatching, complaining, trip rigs, per-diem, vacation or rest periods.

If that's truly why he "signed up for the job", I would have told him to turn in his resignation immediately, if not sooner.

He'll be much happier, and so will his coworkers.

June 2007

It will all start getting better in June 2007. That is when the next hiring boom will be in full swing. Rapid seat movement, lots of jobs, and everyone will going crazy to get into flying and get those great jobs!!

June of 2007?

Started in May of '99 did you?

By that time I'll be number 2 at NWA, I'll pull some strings for you, hehe.

Cheers

.....& thats when the flushbac deal ends at AE!!!

need more info DA Capt

To accurately predict when you will win the lottery I need more info. How many tickets you buy per week? Drawing/winning formula? When you will die? When I have all that info I can then using a probability program give you an estimate of your chances of winning before you die.

I buy tickets when I remember to and the jackpot is large (over $50 Million)... Quick Pick is my "winning formula"... I thought I'd be dead 2 years ago (at 34, for some strange reason)... So no good answer for you on that, I am probably living on borrowed time anyhow...

So what's it say??? What's it say??? C'mon I gotta know!!!

Rez O. Lewshun, I feel your pain. Especially the backpacks, ya'll look like street persons.

The previous generation had many an ambivalent aviator. Boy with a little talent but no direction graduates high school, doesn't have any real plan so he goes to college. Graduates from said college with a B.S in Whatever the Fark, realizes that the armed services will pay him to fly a shiny, pointy jet for a few years, and decides that there are worse things a man could do. He serves out his commitment, and realizes his squadron buddies are all going to make a fair chunk of change at the majors once they separate. His bachelor's in Whatever the Fark is nearly worthless in the job market, and he readily realizes that his best financial option is to go to the airlines. So years later he reads his paper at FL370, trying to forget that he's in an aircraft, and couldn't care less about "bettering the profession." He found himself at a major largely by following the path of least resistance.

Today the boy with no direction sits in a waiting room, and picks up a copy of Flying magazine. He flips through it, and suddenly realizes that there's a pilot shortage, whodathunkit. "The Airlines Are Hiring" the page proclaims. For a mere $43,995 he too could be an airline pilot. The parents have been riding him about finding some direction in life, anyway. Boy realizes he can spend their money, pacify dad, and maybe have some fun. Airline pilot's are rich, right? And who knows, maybe people will even "respect" him. A year later he's in the right seat of an RJ, hatless, backpack toting, cool shades donned, head still in the up and locked position, waiting for people to respect him.

Thats about it in a nutshell....excellent post.

Today's generation is scary.... At one of my former employers I used to get loads of sh!t and get called a "Company Man" because I wore my jacket and hat in the wintertime. Rarely if ever was I seen without the hat when in view of the public. Why? Not because I feel cool wearing it... It's because my company assigned me that task in the FOM. I used to hear pilots say "I don't feel like wearing my uniform properly because I don't get paid enough." Uniforms are not for the pilot...they are for the general John and Jane Q. Public flying from Detroit to Ft. Wayne. They don't know your payscale, they don't know your skill level, all they know is first impressions. Now as a passenger, what would give you the better first impression? A backpack toting hatless pilot with a wrinkled shirt? Or a pilot clad in a Jacket, Hat and a niceley pressed Shirt? Thats a no-brainer....

Thats why every company has that caveat in thier Manuals, "When in view of the public". Thats who it's for...I know every single one of us would do just as professional a job in a Polo Shirt and Shorts, but the general public would think otherwise, thats the truth.

And for those of you who may disagree with me, let me ask you this...

When you interviewed for your prospective jobs, what did you wear? Blue Suit, Red Tie, White Shirt? Why did you wear that? I bet I know the answer... Because you wanted to look professional. Now why do you think that makles you look professional? Answer...Tradition. Thats what is traditionally worn to job interviews. The only reason you wore that getup is to make a good first impression on your prospective employer. Why shouldn't the flying public be afforded the same luxury?

Chew on that....

question for all you Cappo's out there. Would you tell a FO to go get dressed properly or else he could forget about ridding in the right seat?
