Actually, these lowly weekend warriors have every right to train at the same airports that you fly your 'bus into. Get over yourself, it isn't all about you. Moron.

anyway...if i wouldn't have gotten furloughed i'd be flyin' one right now and lovin' it. no box to program (cause nothin's easier than vectors direct), no crossing restrictions, no stuck up captains, no mainline guy sayin' your 'taking his job', no 4 hour productivity breaks (at least where i was), and the most fun flyin' i've ever done!

don't get me wrong, i love flyin' the 170 for $22 an hour and would probably do it for less (if i was dead) but nothin' beats hearing "...you're 60kts faster than the jet in front of you". HA!! now i'll be the slow a$$ if front.

i'm jealous guys...seriously!! i'd go back in a minute just because the majority of the time i had a smile on my face for every flight.


Just today going into Indy, about 10 miles out on straight in.

Tower says traffic is 737 I am following at my 12 o'clock and 6 miles........

in sight........

clear for the visual, contact tower, and, uh, ....you still have a 90 knot overtake on the 737.......

Here is to my turbo prop brothers (Super King Air 200 drivers) who keep telling their CRJ/ERJ buddies that your max service ceiling in the king air is FL350 but they just wont believe you.....
 
ORD TWR: "SAT5022 cleared to land 32L"
SAT5022: "Rog, cleared to land 32L, SAT5022"
ORD TWR: UAL14 heavy, 27L position and hold traffic, C-130 traffic short final to 32L"
(in the flare) ORD TWR: "SAT5022 can you hold short of 27L?"
SAT5022: "Sure, we're going to south cargo, can we just turn off
here at T11?"
ORD TWR, laughing: "I should've known yeah left off and stay with me to the ramp. UAL14 heavy, traffic is off 32L short of your runway, keep it rolling around the corner, cleared for takeoff"

oh yeah...turboprop.

If you take a look at a chart and approach plates you'll understand his frustration. He was complaining about a guy doing practice approaches at SMF. SAC (10 or 15nm away) is a far better place for training and practice. It's a GA field that's towered and has precision and non-precision approaches. There are also several uncontrolled fields with approaches in the same vicinity. Keep in mind airlines are restricted to a tiny percentage of airports. If I was a CFII I'd be training my students somewhere other than SMF.

Although the guy in the PA-28 had every right to be at SMF there are some great alternatives nearby. In a similar vein I don't have to cancel IFR going into an uncontrolled field on a clear night but I do it out of courtesy to the crew that's waiting for their clearance. A lot of this business is just courtesy and common sense. I get no satisfaction out of inconveniencing hundreds of people. If I can get the job done without getting in someone else's way I will.
