We're becoming the only U.S. carrier in even more international markets
November 12, 2008
We will add 15 new international routes to our network for next summer, including service to 12 destinations not flown by any other U.S. carrier. The addition of new transpacific, transatlantic and Africa routes advances our strategy of taking customers to more unique destinations across the globe and investing in underserved markets.
"As America's flag carrier to the world, offering service to more destinations than any other airline is an advantage our customers count on," said Glen Hauenstein, e.v.p-Network Planning and Revenue Management. "In the current atmosphere of international financial uncertainty, the breadth of our network positions us to take advantage of markets that continue to thrive, while offering a natural hedge where there is economic softness."
The new flights for next summer include Salt Lake City to Tokyo-Narita, with connecting service to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and New York-JFK to Gothenberg, Sweden, and Valencia, Spain.
A sampling of our destinations not served by any other U.S. carrier includes Johannesburg, South Africa; Nairobi, Kenya; Monrovia, Liberia; Abuja, Nigeria; Luanda, Angola; Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; Cape Town, South Africa; Lagos, Nigeria; Prague, Czech Republic; and Sal, Cape Verde Islands.
"Delta's successful international flying relies on the unmatched connectivity of our U.S. network, with each hub playing a unique role," Glen said in a memo to all employees. "To that end, Delta will improve connections to the world from our domestic hubs with 14.5% more total capacity between Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, New York and Memphis in January 2009 compared with the year prior.
"The strength of the Delta network is a key element in the foundation for our success for years to come," Glen said. "It means better opportunity for our customers to fly any place they want to go, more opportunities for our crews to fly higher value flights, and more opportunities for all Delta people to work for a financially secure company."
