So you can have one for your passengers? Also, some people get their private then rarely fly small airplanes again, for instance our military IFT students. Just doesn't make a whole lot of sense for these people to go out and blow 400 dollars on a headset they may or may not use.
Good point.

Pick up any aviation magazine and go to the back where the ads are. Get one of those $59.99 "minor cosmetic" blemish headsets. I've heard they are better than DC's and Bose. ;)

Get an ANR set. I wish someone would have told me that in college. Think of your time line. Four years of college flight training, 1+ years instructing, towing banners, flying skydivers, and then who knows how many years flying for the regionals, freight or turboprops. If you dont do it know, you will later, so save yourself the money. I have a DC set that I retrofitted with ANR from headsets inc. and am very happy. www.headsetsinc.com

100% agree. I have a DC 13.4 also. I love it but I am already thinking of getting an ANR. The only problem is that my DC is still in perfect condition and I don't feel like spending $500-600 as long I have a perfect headset. Probably I will end up upgrading. So do yourself a favor and pay $200 more and have it from the beginning.

Have you flown with an ANR headset? You can still hear all of this it is just not as loud. I think it is silly that you request this. Passed all my checkrides with Lightspeed ANR. I have had a couple of issues with the headset but they were fixed right away. The new versions are more durable. Otherwise, you can never go wrong with David Clark. For a decent cheap headset look at some of the generic Marv Golden models. They work well but are not as comfortable on the longer flights. www.marvgolden.com

Yeah I have, although it was a long time ago. I'm sure they have gotten better.

I was flying the aircraft in my avatar when I noticed slight fluctuations of engine rpm. I had normal headsets, my passenger had ANR's and had them on. He did not notice the rpm change of +/- 100 rpm. My passenger was a certified pilot, and it was his plane. OF course, I cannot blame him for not hearing the engine go up and down 100 rpm, maybe he just wasnt paying attention.

Anyway, oil pressure gauge said zero, I declared an emergency with approach, and was already turning toward the nearest airport when the engine started shaking and broke a rod in half. Kept running on the rest of the cylinders though until right over the airport 8 miles away. Turned out to be a clogged oil passage in the crankcase that starved the one cylinder that froze up. Then of course, all the oil seeped out of the hole it made (luckily no smoke/fire) and the rest seized up shortly after. Thankfully, the engine was almost new and under warranty :)

I believe my "regular" headsets gave me an extra few seconds there, and sometimes that makes a big difference. Everybody can have their own opinion.

My Lightspeeds recently stopped working. I called Lightspeed and told them the problem. It was well past warranty coverage. He said no problem whatsoever, thank you for buying Lightspeed, I can either ship the headphones to them or get the part shipped to me. Free of charge either way. I had them mail me the entire cord/ANR/battery holder and recieved it with step by step directions in two days.

I had a similar experience with Lightspeed. The band across the top of my headsets snapped in two. They sent me the part, I couldn't get it installed correctly, sent them the whole mess, and they had them back to me in about a week and a half.

Awesome customer service and a wonderful product. Good luck finding that anywhere else these days.

Mmmmmm Burritos, just a question; was that in a Mooney over New England?

Yup, I'd vote for lightspeed which I'm using now. Far more comfortable than the flightcom denali. Also after a promise from their director of marketing to repair and upgrade my ANR denali, he never came through. So if a company director can't stand behind the product, I guess its indicative of the whole corporation. Go lightspeed...

I agree 100%! I've sent my Lightspeed's in several times over the past 3 years. They have never even asked for a receipt, money, or when I bought them. The only question I got was; what's wrong? Buy the best one you can afford. As far as the noise BS, your hearing will be better off in the long run with ANR... Besides most students can't even feel when they're flying uncoordinated let alone hear the sound of an approaching stall.

You could buy a Lightspeed and send it in for repairs every few years OR you could get a DC and it will not break... Your choice

sigtronics S-40...best non ANR set i've come accross, i've fitted mine with gel seals (best move ever), the lightspeeds are pretty nice too...
I have a pair with gels and they are great. Bullet proof. I have beat mine up for years and they haven't given me a moments trouble. The price is right as well.

I agree, I just returned a pair of Lightspeed 30 3g's I'd only had for a month, the ANR crapped out already. I exchanged them for a pair of DC 13X's. It's a good thing Lightspeed has a good warranty program because their headsets need routine work done, poor quality in my opinion. I won't buy another set of Lightspeeds, but yes, they were very comfortable.

Telex Air 3500

Telex all the way. Same price as a 13.4, but much better quality. The sound quality in the speakers is way better than the 13.4. Also, IMHO, the Telex feels much better on the skull. The boom comes out of the bottom, so it's easy to swing out of the way. Good luck with your choice.
