A couple months ago I heard that HAL was going to furlough. Now I'm hearing that they might not. Anyone have the latest info? I'm in Honolulu on vacation now. Should I stop in and say hi to Mike Dudley even if HAL isn't hiring?

Thanks

HAL is definitely furloughing. There are 29 of us furloughed as 1/16/2003 with 5 more out 2/1/2003. Whether this is all that will be furloughed or if there will be more is the big question. The union and management are meeting latter this month to discuss the future. The results of this meeting (there are no pay concessions on the table) will determine if the furlough is small and short term, or cuts deep and last a long time.

It couldn't hurt to see Mike if you're here, but I don't think we'll be hiring for a while.

Hey Jim, what are most of the f-ed HAL pilots opting to do? Are you guys going to wait it out or are any of you applying at Aloha? One of my AQ friends says HAL resumes are starting to make their way to flight ops at AQ. I have a hard time believing that but it would not surprise me.

Will Aloha hire any furloughed HAL pilots?
Most company's won't even talk to a furloughee.
I know, from experience. :-(

What I was told is traditionally AQ & HA have both hired pilots from across the ramp when times were were bad for one of them. I am not sure if its true, could be somebodys dream but thats what I was trying to find out if its true or not.

Sheez, I can never co-oberate anything between my Aloha rumors and my Hawaiian rumors. They are always as far away as east & west. I hope you're right about the furlough not happening or being very short term.. A military charter could be a cash cow for HAL. Bombs away Hawaiian!

I think most furloughed HAL pilots are going to sit tight for a couple of months and see how things shake out. There is going to be a big union-management pow wow on 1/15 and there are rumors of 4 aircraft heading to Europe and the Middle East for military charters (which would entail keeping some of the DC-10s flying).

I haven't applied to Aloha and haven't heard about any furloughed HAL pilots that have. I'm not sure how we'd do there as there is historically bad blood between the pilot groups/companies - just look at the $hit that flew around during the failed merger. I don't think this is directed at individual pilots, but more of a corporate culture and competative market thing. Our pilot groups also have opposite opinions on many issues such as how we conduct training, etc. Further, I'd probably go back to HAL when recalled so that wouldn't be fair to Aloha (I like HALs aircraft mix and routes and potential routes better).

I personally think that there will be new routes and 757s on property soon. I might be looking through rose colored glasses, but I think the furlough will be relatively short.

just rumors i've heard of course...

only rumors, but from a decent source. something to the effect of you have already knocked out the 757 deal and the wet lease thing in asia is also a done deal. would sure save some jobs for you guys! you're also poised well if united has troubles. now if you can just redo your leases on your 6's......
