Anybody got any suggestions for late-January Oahu vacations for the budget-conscious airline pilot? Sources of low-cost vacation packages, tips on Delta non-reving...I'll take any suggestions or advice anybody can give me.

This is our last hurrah vacation before the new baby shows up!

Have you considered staying at a bed and breakfast versus the hotel scene? big savings can be had there. Just do a web search for "bed and breakfast Hawaii". Just a thought.

Any of the 2nd tier hotels at Waikiki run about $50 to $60 per night, any they are not bad. Rent a car from the airport, a lot cheaper than in town. Go to the North Shore and at least enjoy watching the waves.

Camp on the beach

You don't have to camp out all week but a couple nights might be fun and save you a couple hundred bucks--spend the savings on something you might not have done otherwise.

Aloha

The north shore is nice, but be advised that it is very difficult to find inexpensive lodging on that side, especially on short notice. As I recall, you can get to that side from Waikiki in about an hour or so of driving. I think that Oahu would be tough to camp on, too many people, not enough island. I spent a week camping on Hawaii, and a few days camping on Maui without any problems. I don't think that any of the public beach parks allow camping, and thay are patrolled at night to enforce that. (don't ask how I know) Campgrounds seem to all require prior reservations, but if you're creative and persistent, you can find some nice unofficial camping spots The bed and breakfast idea is good, but do a litle research ahead of time. I've found that many won't let you stay without pior reservations. Personally I'd spend minimal time on Oahu and head for Hawaii, Maui, or Molokai. I've not been to Kauai, but I hear it's very nice too.

It's a boy, due 5/5/03. Our first son will be a year old on 3/25/03.

We planned the first one. We weren't expecting the second one...whoops.

I'll show you a daddy's boy! That's my son in the avatar there. (Doesn't he look like he's saying "who was that for?")

Hmmm, I guess with a 10 month old baby and a pregnant wife you're probably not too interested in camping .... note to self, learn to read more carefully......
