Well in fairness to SW....Airtran already had the "Airtran effect". ATL fares are/were low before the merger. If/when SW adds flying to some Delta monopoly routes, those fares will drop significantly. SW costs are still decently lower than Delta's, especially with the bew pilot contract.

funnyman is got it right. There was no "SWA effect" because it had already been done by airtran. This has helped Delta out and raised fares because SWA is not (and had no intention of) going to run a superhub out of ATL like airtran did. It will be good for both in the long run as i doubt SWA will ever be as big as airtran was in ATL (good for Delta) and SWA will have access to the mega market that is ATL. The SWA effect ain't (necessarily) dead...ATL was different.
