Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Phil Condit just recently 'retire' as chairman and CEO due to the board and stockholders having similar complaints as posted here (ie. no vision, bad decision making, the govt 767 deal)? I think there are others in the leadership of the company who feel the same way about the last 10-15 years and want to make some changes. I think 7E7 may be just the beginning of some new things to come from Seattle/Chicago.

I think Boeing is considering profitability more important than the vainglorious massive market share battle - at any cost. The military buy, purportedly, was to balance the cyclical behavior of the commercial division.

I'd "heard", but have no evidence, that the delivery slot delay of several years, for the 737, hurt it's competitive nature.
