Okay...so the gestapo got your tweezers and finger nail file. What I want to know is why a freight dog can walk right through the FBO door and without any security at all access the entire NAS. Hmmm...if a whale skipper can't be trusted with a nail file yet a foreign FO without cockpit access (typed on company ID) has what amounts to un-screened access to restricted areas someone somewhere has a warped sense of reality. Someone needs to shake some sugar trees at the FAA and get on the stick or history may repeat itself. I call on all airline pilots to speak out against single pilot operations and demand security screening at FBO's for night freight runners. Fair is fair. The "nintendo generation" at the helm in a race to get the highest score (most flight time) is, to say the least, un-nerving. Refer to the post regarding the Captain using his cell phone while taxiing onto an active runway. That sort of garbage is grounds for complete revocation of all pilot certs and ratings. Glad I'm out of the business and on to another career. Anyone hungry? Out. Sometimes I can't help but truly believe military pilots understand the essence of aviation and seem to be much more disciplined and much better trained in several critical areas...not the least of which is Airmanship and CRM. Sorry all you FSI pilots...you are not in the right seat of that regional plane to "train" and the tid-bit of CRM training you received just doesn't quite measure up to your military counterparts. Obviously, I've seen good and bad from both ranks but the prevailing trend seems to be heading in a very ominous direction. Thanks goodness for automation. Just my two cents but when I read the post about the captain that used his cell phone and the other stuff in the post, it kind of got my blood boiling. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. The old theory of what happens when the door is closed stays in the airplane does have exceptions. Put out the NOTAMS on that guy and demand the FAA allow tweezers for crying out loud! Out. By the way...all you civilian trained pilots out there...don't take my opinion too personally, I've seen some military pilots do some pretty wacky stuff too. My point is there is a lot of work to be done in the area of Aviation Safety and Security and arbitrary rulemaking by bean counters and bureaucratic banana-heads needs to be reviewed. Sorry if I seem a little rough around the edges but dammit...guys and gals...cell phone conversations in position? Come on!

I don't see the problem. If I call the hotel while on the approach I won't have to wait for the van. Jeez! And come on, how much attention does it take to hold in position? A monkey could do it!

---BTL--- your out of control. First, it's not necessary to have such tight screening of the single pilot freight dog pilots...they simply do not have what the terrorists are looking for. When these guys want to make a point they want to do it a big way, not with a C-310 or Baron, Mu-2, or Lear full of cancelled checks, beside what terrorists would want to get into an Mu-2, he's risking his life. LOL

My thinking would be that if the terrorist singled out the night freighter he'd have to do when he's walking to the plane, at that point if it was me... I'd pull his shirt over his head and start a hockey fight with him and that's ALL the farther he'd get!

Not a problem in my opinion.

Dude, you missed the point entirely! What I'm saying is (perhaps sarcastically) is professional pilots and crewmembers should not have to go through the screening process. They should be exempt. Oh...by the way...are you some kind of terrorist expert or what? How so you know what they would or wouldn't do? Anyway. I'm not going to speculate on that stuff...I just believe the wrong message is being sent to the raghead renegades. Think about it...they're probably talking in a hideout somewhere about how much havoc, paranoia and misplaced focus on the problem. Yeah yeah that's it...thoroughly search the Captain's bag...yeah...that's the ticket. And don't forget about the two nuns or the 18 year old on his way to college. Random screening does't and never will "solve" the problem. What's the security solution? You tell me since you have stated you know how they think. Pull back the reigns there cowboy. Maybe one of those nuns is a freight dog. Dubya is doing the right thing by pressing the issue of disarmament. Tactical nukes are not out of the question. Whatever it takes to maintain world order. I call on all airline pilots to stand up for themselves and raise the baloney flag on the tweezer bit. That is all...

I carry my tweezers every day. No one says a thing about it.

I agree with the others. You are out of control.

And it seems you are jumping on this bandwagon way too late. Where were you when it really was a probelm??

He is out there!!!

By the way BTL or should I say Mr. Discipline, the guy on the phone holding short or in position was previously in the military. So much for that!!!!!!!!!

What a goof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cell Phones in the Cockpit.

I use one often. I imagine in your illustrious career you have never been to an uncontrolled airfield with 200 other airplanes all wanting to take off at the same time on an IMC day? (Georgetown, Delaware after a Dover Downs Winston Cup race or how about Lenwee County, MI after a race up there?) Oh did I mention there is no RCO or Clearance delivery to speak to. How would you get your clearance and departure instructions? Have Miss Cleo send them to you in a thought transfer?

As to demanding FBOs conduct screening, some do. And guess who pays for it? You get a nice bill along with the groundhandeling fee. Sure would be nice if Uncle Sugar would cover that one too.

As to how would I know what a terrorist might or might not do? Having endured my share of counter terrorism training and acted as a simulated Terrorist, I would say I have a fair idea of how their thought process works. Can you say the same?

before cell phones

Well before I ever had a cell, it was run inside, call get the clearence and hope you could get started and off before the void time

Ask for a longer void time. Cell phones are handy but if states are pushing to ban their use on the roads doesn't it make sense that 100% of your attention should be focused on driving? Just a thought don't want to pick an argument.
