I thought this idea was dead-on-arrival:
ATLANTA AIRPORT GETS NEW NAME
The world's busiest airport will now be known as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The name change is expected to be in place by the end of 2003. Maynard Jackson was the city's first black mayor and did much to expand air services and the airport. William Hartsfield was the city's longest-serving mayor and is credited with envisioning an aviation future for Atlanta as the airline industry was in its infancy. The push to rename the airport came after Jackson's death on June 23. Hartsfield died in 1971.

Yeah but....

Can you imagine if the airport was originally named for a black mayor and was then changed to include the name of a white mayor???

The entire country would EXPLODE!

I can hear it now....

Captain: "Ladies and Gentlemen thank you for joining us for our flight from Gulianni-Clinton-LaGuardia airport to Hartsfield-Jackson-Franklin-Al Sharpton Intl. And thank you for choosing Delta-Hi-Fi Buys-Home Depot- Airlines."

There are much more important issues facing Atlanta than the name of their frickin' Airport.

Besides...Nobody calls it anything but....The Airport.
It's not like Chicago, where it could mean O'Hare, Midway, or...well... Meigs is gone, but you get my point.

In Atlanta "the airport" means only one place to 99.9% of the people in that state and the millions who connect there on their way to somewhere else.

Tailwind

Everytime I check in with the tower, ground, clearance, etc....it will be: "Hartsfield, etc....." I refuse the change.

I refuse to change as well. Hartsfield had the foresight to see what aviation can do for a city and developed the airport. Jackson saw a way for corruption to pay off in big dividends and raped the situation. Look at the number of his family members who have jobs there or who stole locations to open a business. How many of his cronies have raped the airport with their kickbacks and being payed for things they did not do. Of course Bill Campbell did it as well. I guess if you are a strong corrupt politician you get something named for you..This is an atrosity and puts a blight on Atlanta. I guess the next naming will be for the whitehouse in Washington. The Bill Clinton memorial cat house because of all the "undercover" work that took place there..

Just like when I talk to ATC at DCA. "Washington National..." or "National..." I refuse to call it Reagan. Some of the controllers like it too.

Maybe someday I'll fly into O'Hare-Daley International...

I wonder if "Capt. Herb" will call it Hartsfield-Jackson in the traffic reports on WSB?

Captain Herb is somewhat off the wall but how many folks do you know that get to take their 206 home every day and keep it in their back yard? No traffic for Captain Herb.

Maybe one day I and my family will steal enough to have something in Atlanta named for us...

then again we are white... oh well.

I can see it now..
"Delta flight XXX, welcome to Atlanta Hartsfield - Jackson - Al Sharpton airport"
"Turn left on Taxiway MLK, then right on taxiway Malcolm Xray" By the way, welcome to the "South"...ughh, sorry that reminds certain people of the civil war....welcome to Georgia, USA"

This is yet another example of certain elements in America who have a willingness to either change history or revise it!

I am not going to change the **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** avatar. It will always be -just- Hartsfield.

uugh

Renaming the Atlanta Airport, from Heartsfield to some thing else would be like renaming the varsity,,,,,,,,,,,, to well let see,,,,,,,, grease bowl,,,,,,,,,,, hotdog stand, and some other names.

So does that mean that Jepp has to reprint all the approach plates that were just sent out , with the new name???

Where is AFRO MAN on this, he had some good post, back when this was covered some time ago.

peace out,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I was issued a clearance the other day...."Candler 123 is cleared to Hartsfield-Jackson airport as filed.............."

Of course in my read back I made sure to stress the "Hartsfield" and left off the Jackson. My own little protest.

:D

Aren't you excited just waiting to hear about the lawsuit that Jesse "The Media Whore" Jackson will file extorting money from the airlines because their pilots won't say it on the radio. I can't imagine why the controllers would say it other than to prevent that.

Heard a discussion about this on the radio the other day. Center cleared someone to Hartsfield- Jackson, someone asked "who is Jackson?" The controller told him it was the former mayor of Atlanta with measured disgust in his voice, while someone else chimed in anonymously "no it's not, it's a former confederate general!". Thought that would be a fun conspiracy rumour to start that the name was changed to honor a confederate general.

Actually those groups that wanted the change, tried to get the Hartsfield named REMOVED, and replaced with just Jackson..

They werent very happy about Hartsfields name being kept on there, but they realized it was the only way they were going to get the Jacksons name on there too
