Why have these? Is it to be used as a backup in the even of aircraft radio failure????

Yes. Some even have Nav ability so if your Nav radios go out you can still get a cdi needle on your transceiver.

That's what I figured, but didn't know about the nav ability. Maybe I'll buy one when it comes time to XC..........

You are the reason I quit giving primary dual.

Carry a handheld

I've actually used my handheld when my radio crapped out on me, just get the headset adapter and you're in business.

Deleted my own post. Upon reflection I decided it was just mean. So there.

I always carried a receiver with me in my flight bag all through my training, and anytime now that I do personal GA flights.

All it is was a handheld weather scanner that you can program in any frequency. If I ever lost radios, I'd have the ability to listen to tower, although I wouldn't be able to talk to them. I could atleast hear if they knew I was lost comms, and what the traffic was doing before I got to the airport to land. Never saw it worth the handful's of money more to get the transceiver.

I think if you dont mind the extra 8-10 oz's it'll take up in your flight bag, that its a great thing to carry with you.

I used to have a receiver with me all the time when I was a private. Then one day I forgot to bring it with me and it had to happen that day, lost comm going into Lafayette, LA, a Class C airport, and there I was justout of the box with 45 hours..... it was fun though, got to see all the green and red lights!!
