Can dents the diameter of a marble on the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer effect laminar flow or disrupt the aerodynamics/downforce on a 182? Would this accelerate the accumulation of ice if present? I don't know if it's rock or hail damage on this part of the 182 but I was curious if this had any effect on anything besides cosmetics.

I would like to know too. There is a 152 at the airport with the horizontal stabilizer having a dent about that size from someone taking out a runway end light. The same event could by why your 182 also has a dent.

Where is avbug? I think he would know.

Nope, no effect. I've flown several aircraft that were once declared "total losses" due to hail damage. They pass annuals and perform by the book numbers. I joke that the airplane flies like a golf ball - the little dents just make it go straighter and faster. Of course with any aircraft damage, an inspection by an A&P with IA credentials is required.

Laminar flow is very difficult to achieve in production aircraft. A C182 has about the laminar flow characterisitics of a card board box. The dent might not look pretty, but it has such minimal effect on the airflow that it can not be measured.

Thanks squiggly line,

(Not sure what to call you)

I didn't think it would make much difference but figured I'd ask.

I don't know where Avbugs' been, he hasn't been posting on any other of his boards like ipilot either.

I hope he is Ok.
