Haven't heard much on this lately. What's the deal? Are pilots allowed to pack heat? Which airlines allow this, if any at all? I feel like this topic is dead for some reason that I missed out on. Help me out here, y'all. :)

They could tell you all about it, but then they'd have to kill you afterwards.

The first rule about Fight Club is: you don't talk about Fight Club.

The second rule about Fight Club is: YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB.

From the smallest, single-pilot-135 charter companies to the regionals to the majors, thousands upon thousands of pilots are equipped with a new tool: the .40 or 9mm... and not a moment too soon.

Oh My God Guns In The Cockpit That's Horrible How Could They What If They Miss And Shoot A Hole In The Wall And The Plane Explodes And Falls Like A Rock And Everyone Dies In A Fiery Ball Of Vomit Bags And Jet Fuel Lord Help Us All This Is The End Of The World Waaaaaaahhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the proper noun capitalisations has a much better effect. Makes it read more like the title to a 'serious discussion' instead of plain old ranting.

ok, then here's my next question: truthfully, how many of YOU pilots out there carry a gun, and was it worth the hassle/cost of training/recurrent training to be able to carry it?

Hey Osama..

You're not going to find many willing to discuss it..

Lets just say there is a significant security need to not say a lot...

I DID read the other day that there seems to be a new group of federal deputies that are now the second largest group of law enforcement officers on the federal payroll..

How did that happen?

Mullah, mullah, mullah... JIHAD!!!

Yeah, good call on not telling. Who knows how many Al-Quaeda roam these boards *cough*flechas*cough* :D

To be eligible to volunteer for and participate in the program you must:

  • Have a current FAA Airman's certificate.
  • Have a current Class 1 or Class 2 medical certificate.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be an eligible flightcrew member flying for an eligible passenger or cargo air carrier:

-For passenger flightcrew members, you must currently be employed by a passenger air carrier or private charter company operated under 49 CFR part 1544 (i.e. passengers are screened by TSA).

-For cargo flightcrew members, you must currently be employed by a cargo air carrier operating aircraft with a gross takeoff weight in excess of 100,000 pounds (45,500 kilograms, or 100, 309.8 lbs) and serve as a flightcrew member for aircrafts of that weight.

Do a lot of single pilot 135 companies require passenger screening by TSA?

Nope, but most states allow people to conceal firearms with a proper license, even on airplanes.

my only question is regarding the cargo guys: when would you be forced to wield your piece (insert sexual connotation here)? the only time, I figure, would be if someone attacked you on the ground. although, if you're flying a heavy i supposed it'd be easier to stow away and try to mess with the pilots in-flight. but i can just picture someone flying a Caravan packing a .357 Mag or .50 cal Desert Eagle. :D

I hate to sound ignorant, but there is a threshold where you have to call the TSA and have them screen the passengers. Perhaps it is the Transport category aircraft, or over a certain weight? I don't USUALLY worry about the passengers, although there was record of a news team having a couple of middle-eastern men chartering a helocopter in St. Louis with some guns in their carry-ons to "show how easy it was to hijack chartered aircraft". They showed up and the FBI and local 5-0's decended on the place.

Many, many couriers have been jacked in the parking lots of banks or have been followed, even though they're only carrying bags full of cancelled checks. There is also a tendancy for people to have a strange interest in aircraft comings and goings at small, unsecured aircraft so late at night. I'm not sure of the exact reasons for each pilot to pack heat, but each one has his own, and that is his right.

You said payroll. Is there any compensation? I thought it was all volunteer...

We're all packing. Every one of us. Airlines, charter, corporate, and fractionals. Don't ask us directly, or we'll be forced to place you on "the list". Ask again, and we'll be forced to shoot you. It's the law.

As soon as they get the harmonics problem worked out, this is what us Van Drivers will have to carry...

...at 1900 rounds a minute, you have to pace yourself. Otherwise you'll be scratching around your flight bag for another drum magazine.

Have you seen some of the "quality" ground handlers over on the cargo side of most airports? Some of them look like they're ex cons. You need to be packing just to make it from the building to the airplane safely!!
