I'd be happy to have a Gulfstream pilot on my jumpseat. I've used them more than once to get home, they've been quite cordial with their jumpseat...

I went down there to look at the place a few years ago. My gosh that place was a dump and the people were not the nicest people. That was their flight school I could not imagine what the business is like!!!

Cornbread- ASA before I came on board required applicants to pass training at Flight Safety. ASA did not sell the right seat, all training was through Flight Safety. I understand it was not a piece of cake. ASA was my first Airline of choice but had to wait 6 months till they dropped their policy. I love it here and think that we have great days ahead. Jealous?

TWA dude- I would never use the jumpseat as a weapon. And I have been known (just today in fact) to do everything I can (changing planned alternate, etc) to get a pilot on our flight (the flight was delayed and coded WX delay!).
I have no stomach for anyone who supports a company that rents the right seat. Gulrstream and Tab Express or a known scab will never ride on my aircraft. Plain and simple enough for you?

Paying for training and crossing a picket line are two totally different things.
Just curious, Do you give the Comair guys the boot as well? (the ones who were hired back in the 90s)

Attending Flight Safety and paying for the training (which has no direct connection to the company) is 180 degrees opposite of a company that sells 250 hours in the right seat. I myself refused to PFT. But, I hold no grudge against those who did. I could be up the list 500 numbers had I PFT'D.

I know what a scab is and what a right seat renter is. For the puRpose of this topic I am lumping them together.

I gotta agree with Norksman on this -- you contradict yourself. Now I agree on the SCAB issue -- they've relinquished their jumpseat rights, a priviledge negotiated through union action. But for non-SCABs you are most definitely trying to fight your own little war and in the process you jeopardize the benefit for everyone. You know how it works: some guy for airline X gets denied the JS by some captain for airline Y, word gets around and now no Y airline JS'ers are welcome on X. In other words, you've just skrewed some commuters at your own airline, not to mention degrading the whole profession with such pettiness. For a little education why not call your union JS coordinator and find out what s/he has to deal with on a daily basis. Captains fighting their personal wars are often counselled by their own union as to the intent of the JS. I just don't know how to say any differently how wrong you are to deny JS'er because you don't like their airline. Please educate yourself.

I still don't why I try... Rereading my post it seems pretty clear. Seat renters not wanted. Cross a picket line not wanted. I did not PFT but understand that at the time it was pretty standard in the industry. I waited, flew freight until the industry changed and then went to a regional that dropped the PFT policy. Why can't the thread starter wait instead of staining his career for 250 hours of turbine?

I disagree. I believe these operations help keep our industry down and should not be encouraged.

TWA Dude, I would think you would be sensitive to this subject since you got furloughed. Companies selling the right seat while professionals are on the street is something I can't stomach. I am glad that you have found work at Cactus.

you better get used to denying people the jumpseat because there are a sh!tload of people going to gulfstream and that have gone through it. i know they are hiring street captains and i that is what he is talking about in the first post. if you take the job as a capt then i say good luck to you. it is a good place to work, but you will be working hard. i think key west is the junior base for capts. the other bases are fort lauderdale, miami, key west, and tampa. dont worry about what people might say about it because they wont say anything to your face, they only have the balls to talk big on a board like this.

You're quite right but not in the way you intended. As I wrote earlier during the merger I saw guys that couldn't control their anger and thus denied pilots JS's just to make sure others knew their displeasure. Not only didn't it work (it never does) but it increased the general ill will. If ALPA were to come out with some unified policy to deny ALL pilots of airline X then I could go along without any issue, but just having a smattering of I'll-Change-The-World-Myself captains won't do any good and in fact does plenty of harm. All right, enough said.

If you have an ATP and 0 upgrade time, go for it. Get the PIC time. 0 training cost. It's not as bad as some say it is. It's certainly better than flying 135 or flight instructing that's for sure.

Jump Seat Problems

Um I checked with those guys a few years back and they did NOT allow their guys that were going through the 250 program jumpseat any where!!! Not even on gulfstream flights. Their Company ID's have a big red stamp on it that says Jump Seat Not Authorized.

So whats the big fu*kin deal Wil!?! You will not see them asking for a seat on your plane any way, how would they get past the gate with the big red stamp?

I am a current Captain for Gulfstream and I am not ashamed in the least. It has gotten me and thousands of others what they want and that is 121 turbine PIC time. Gulfstream is definately not the greatest airline by any stretch, but it has gotten extreemly better since we have had our contract ( I believe there is a link on this thread to see the contract). The company does a good job staying within the rules of the contract as well. You will work alot at Gulfstream, especially right now since we are very short on Captains. At least 15 have left in the last 4 to 5 months for other regionals (PSA, ASA, COEX, etc.) and airlines like Spirit, Southwest, and Miami Air. We are aloud to fly 120 hours in a month and as a Captain right now, you will fly close to that. The airplanes are in pretty good shape, but they do get hot on the ground this time of year. Be prepared to work alot if you come here as a Captain. I am amazed at the amount of people who bash the program and do not have all of the facts. It only seems to get bashed here on flight info and no where else. I have never been denied the jumpseat of any carrier or had anyone say that I shouldn't have come here. That kind of talk does not discourage anyone here at all. So many people have moved on from here with no problem including right now. As far as our jumpseat policies, we take as many as we have seats for NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!!! We have quite a few jumpseaters too. Everyone here is very friendly toward each other and other pilots and you don't have to worry about word getting out that some ASA Captain wont let us jumpseat on his airplane so we wont allow ASA jumpseaters anymore. BIG DEAL! He is in the minority and we will get on the next ASA flight. I know of at least 1 of our Captains who jumpseats on ASA every week and they treat him great. I would even alow this ASA captain on my jumpseat after what he said because I simply think it is foolish to play games. By the way, we just had 2 or 3 pilots from here go there so I wonder what he will do when one of our pilots turns up as his First Officer. Anayway, the way the program works is that the guys do pay for 250 hours as a FO in the right seat and when their time is up, they can get hired at Gulfstream permanitly if they are hiring, or have an option of an interview at some other regional airlines. The FO's we hire here then upgrade to Captain when they get thier time and thier senority number comes up. This is where we get 95% of our Captains. At times, they have to hire off the street do to large #'s of Captains leaving at once. And believe me, I wll be the first to admit that this is not a place to make a career, you get your time and move on. The FO's are decent. They pass a 121 checkride just like anyone else. Some are excellent, and some need some extra attention, but I can assure you that they don't make it thru IOE if they can't get the airplane on the ground by themselvs if something happens to the Captain. Key West is the junior base for Captains now, then Miami/Fort Lauderdale. The 2 senior bases are Tampa and West Palm Beach. Hope this helps.
