Pretty sure that's an onboard camera housing.

On a side note, I had a chance to fuel that particular aircraft last month, when some potential buyer wanted to see it fly from Naples, FL to London non-stop. Put over 3,700 gallons on it, which was probably one of the largest fuel orders in our airport's history.

It's for the Enhanced Vision System FLIR sensor. And yes they teach us about that at The Academy.

Nah, HUD's don't use cameras.

The camera we see here on the 550 is probably just giving the pilots extra eyes. EDIT: In this case, probably for the FLIR system, as mentioned previously.
