I was wondering what some of you who are working on your PPL are paying for ground school. My friend told me his instructor is charging him $30/hour and it takes about 2 hours to complete 1 chapter of the Jeppesen Textbook, mind you their are 11 chapters.
$30 x 2hr. = $60/1chapter
11ch x $60= $660

Is this a normal cost for your CFI to charge you for ground school?
What are some of your experiences when it came to hitting the books in prep for your written and how much did it cost you.
Should I tell him to do it himself and save that money for 6 hours of flight time??
thanks

I have a friend that gave me his entire Jepp PPL set in '98. I do all of my reading and studying at home, then apply it next time I go flying. My CFI does half hour preflight, Flight, then usually 15 minute debrief, if its even nesscary. I don't think that sitting there and having a CFI read along with you is plausable. Tell him you would like to do all of the ground work yourself, at home, for free. You can read the chapters yourself, and anything you don't understand, you can write down and take to the CFI for discussion.

If he is really concerned about the ground school, do what I did. Go to Office Max, and copy all of the post-chapter questions out of the book located at the end of each chapter, then copy off the answer appendix in the back. After you complete a chapter, do the questions you copied off, and then take them to the CFI. He can check them with the answer key, and see what areas you missed, and what yall need to go over.

No point in teaching someone something they allready understand.

Why not take a Ground School class taught by a Ground Instructor? I did this at my school, it was about $200 for the 10 week class, each class was about 2-3 hours long. We followed the Gleim book test questions order as a syllabus, and my CFI had me follow the Jepp book on my own time for his syllabus.

Yeah it would make sense to read the book yourself at home and bring up w/your CFI whatever you dont understand.

I have suggested that to my friend as well as going to a ground school course where the cost is significantly lower.

BTW, there are 3 tests you have to take to get your PPL, correct?
the written, oral, and what else?

Which ones are conducted by the FAA?

Written, Oral, and your Flight Test(checkride.

The Written is usually taken on a computer(at least it is here), and the Oral and Checkride are usually done with an FAA Examiner.

When i did the ppl ground school it was 100$ and something around 9 weeks long, 4-6 hours a week. If i was him I would goto one of them weekend things and take the test a week after.

Another option is to get Vidoes or DVD from Kings or Sportys for around 200 bucks. No need to have an instructor charging you for something you can do yourself. I studied everything on my own with videos and sold them afterwards for a good price on EBAY.

This worked for my PPL up to the instructor ratings.

Only a few students NEED to be spoonfed, page by page, and it does not look like you are one of those.

You should find a 141 school and use the Cessna videos. They sub for all the ground training that you will have to do on your PPL

Just a quick point... You do not have to be 141 to use the Cessna (or any brand for that matter) video/cd-rom/dvd course. You will still need a CFI to sign you off to take the knowledge test and to sign off that you did the required ground school, but assuming you find a CFI who is familiar with the course in question, it shouldn't be a problem. Also, I seem to remember the Cessna CD-Rom course being about $400, so if price is the deciding factor, you might well want to stick with a community college or weekend session course.

Thanks for all your replies, they are duly noted. As for my friend, he is switching his CFi because he believes that he is being milked and subliminally forced to take ground school with him by saying he needs to know this stuff in the Jep book before he flys..bs

BTW, do the 141 schools charge more than part 61 schools in terms of ground school?

I took and passed an aviation course at my college and am going to have my course instructor sign me off to take the knowledge test... ez as pi. ;) i hope//
