I think we've all read Fate is the Hunter, so I'll tell you something different instead.
My father taught me:
"There's nothing more useless than altitude above you, runway
behind you, and fuel you left at the gate."
"The only time you've got too much fuel is when you're on fire."
"If it feels like something's wrong, it probably is."
And I came up with this one during a C.R.M. course at my company:
"If your first officer sudden starts addressing you in a very
diplomatic way, you're f_cking something up. Look around and
figure out what it is!" (And you can quote me on that!)
From the The Caine Mutiny, which I recommend all pilots read right after they finish Fate...:
"If I were you, Commander, I'd worry a little less about making mistakes, and a little more about doing the most sensible and useful thing that occurs to you in any given circumstances."
And finally, my favorite...from Robert Mason, author of Chickenhawk:
